Recover Disk Space After Installing Service Pack In Windows Vista

When you install Vista (Service Pack) SP1 / SP2, a backup of all replaced files is made. This is done so you can roll back to pre- SP1 if you desire. Both SP1 and SP2 has been out for some time now and many of you will no doubt be satisfied with using it. In this guide, you will learn how to reclaim / recover disk space taken up by the Vista SP1 and SP2 install.
By following this guide, you will be able to save 600 - 800 MB of disk space (in case of Vista SP1) And substantial increase in case of Vista SP2. Please note: After running this tool, you cannot uninstall Vista SP1 or Vista SP2 as the case may be.
Reclaim Disk Space after SP1 Install:
1. Press WINKEY+R
2. Type vsp1cln.exe and hit enter or you can even try typing this in start menu search box in windows vista.
3. You will be prompted a question whether to keep Vista SP1 permanently in the system.
4. Once you type “Y” and press enter, the system will start performing the windows components clean.
After the cleansing process, users will notice the free hard disk space has increased substantially.
Reclaim Disk Space after SP2 Install:

If users had noticed, after installing the Vista SP2, the hard disk’s space had been taken up substantially. This was mainly because a lot of old Vista RTM and SP1 backup files and components were not deleted upon the installation of new SP2.
To keep your hard disk clean from those old and unused SP1 backup files, you can try the new Service Pack Cleanup Tool which is also named as compcln.exe. This successor for SP1 cleanup tool, Vsp1cln.exe, can easily remove all the system files (RTM and SP1) inherited from the older versions but replaced by Vista SP2.

Running this compeln.exe :
1. Click Start and All Programs and Accessories and Command Prompt or Press WINKEY+R  and type cmd to open Command Prompt Window or you can even try typing cmd in start menu search box in windows vista.
2. Execute the command Compcln.exe The path is “c:\Windows\System32 \compcln.exe”. (you can even try typing compcln.exe in start menu search box)
3. You will be prompted a question whether to keep Vista SP2 permanently in the system.
4. Once You type “Y” and press enter, the system will start performing the windows components clean.
After the cleansing process, You will notice the free hard disk space has increased substantially.
