Spyware is any form of computer software that is installed covertly onto a personal computer, so as to intercept or take partial control over the user’s system, and their interaction with the computer, all done without the user’s informed consent or knowledge.
While the term spyware generally suggests the presence of software that secretly monitors the user’s behaviour, the actual function of spyware tends to extend well beyond simple system monitoring.
Spyware programs can collect all sorts of personal information fort eh system user. For example: Internet surfing habits (via sites that have been visited prior), can interfere with user control of the computer (by installing additional software), is capable of redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party.
Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and of course a loss of Internet or other programs.
