Icons Do Not Appear On My Desktop | Bring Back Missing Icons To Your Desktop

Windows XP attempts to make your life easier (when you choose not to use Classic Desktop) by removing all of the icons, except Recycle Bin, from the desktop.

This may annoy you, however, so you can easily get back standard desktop icons if you want. You can do this in a couple of different ways, but the easiest is to use the Customize Desktop feature.

Or, When you first got your computer, it probably had shortcuts for My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, and the Recycle Bin on the desktop. If you or someone else removed any of those shortcuts and you’d like to get them back, you can easily restore them.
Solution:
To put icons back on the desktop, follow these steps:
1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display. Click the Desktop tab.
3. Click the Customize Desktop button.
4. On the Desktop Items window, General tab, shown in the following illustration, click
the check boxes next to the desktop icons you want to show, such as My Documents, My Computer, and so forth. When you are done, click OK.

Another way to get back your desktop icons is choosing classical start menu (refer screen shot).
Just right click on your start menu and choose properties
Select the type of start menu you want.
Note: When you choose the normal start menu, you will be seeing the icons or links for My computer, my documents etc in your start menu. where if you choose classic start menu all those will be available as icons in your desktop.
Another Way:
  1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties (refer previous screen shot).
  2. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
  3. In the Desktop icons area in the Desktop Items dialog box, select the desktop icons that you want to appear on your desktop.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click OK again.
The icons you selected will be displayed on your desktop.
