RapidShare is one of most widely used popular online file sharing hosting millions of files for downloading, uploaded by users around the world. Most of the user uses free rapidshare account which has various limitations like low bandwidth, difficult captcha, upload limit etc.

Over a period rapidshare has lost its reputation because of this limitation on free account. But still the number of files uploaded on Rapidshare is more then any other online file sharing website. One issue which users faces while downloading files from rapidshare is wait time and there is no automated program for downloading set of rapidshare files.

There are many applications that help us download files from Rapid Share. Here, I am discussing about the best that i have experienced so far.

1 - Rapidshare Plus:
Rapidshare plus lets you to download queue of rapidshare files automatically by just providing rapidshare links. You just need to add download file Rapidshare links to Rapidshare Plus and rest of the downloading task will be done by Rapidshare Plus. Rapidshare Plus is sort of Rapidshare Download manager for Free Account Users.
Features of Automatic Rapidshare File downloader Rapidshare plus

1) You can Add/Delete any number of Download File Links
2) You can Add Proxy server setting
3) Start or Stop Download Process (No Resume Option yet available)
4) Displays file download progress and over progress bar
5) Time Remaining and Time elapsed
6) Current Download Speed

Features Missing: - No Proxy Settings
If you are accessing your internet through a proxy, also your proxy needs authentication, then, rapid share plus wont work for you. Till Now (version 4.0) there is no provision for setting up proxy. Rapid share plus will just take your Internet connection settings from your internet explorer.

2- Raptor:
"Raptor - is manager of a well-known file-Rapidshare."
This is another software just as what i have discussed in rapid share plus. There is no need to follow links, look for the correct button, wait to download parts. Just add to the list of all references and indicate where to save files, everything else Raptor make yourself!.
Note that, here there is a option for Proxy settings.

Office 2007, the predecessor of Office 2010, is version 12. Office 2010 will be version 14, skipping version 13, the number that Microsoft assumes may be not so lucky. Or, dont forget that Microsoft released a version of office for MAC as Office 2008. Is it Office 13?
The Microsoft Office 2010 is a limited, invitation only program which will provide you with the opportunity to experience early, pre-release versions of Office 2010 which will include the following applications: Word 2010, Excel 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, OneNote 2010, Communicator 2010, Access 2010, InfoPath 2010 and Publisher 2010.

Microsoft Office 2010 provides people at home or work with a comprehensive set of tools that helps them gather and consolidate virtually any type of information, find what they are looking for quickly, and easily share information with others across geographical or organizational boundaries, so they can deliver better results faster.

Microsoft intends to release Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview to invited guests who register to sign up for Office 2010 CTP Program only by July 2009. Office 2010 was previously known by codename Office 14 (taken cue from its version), and wrongly assume to be Office 2009.

The setup installer of both 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 (TP 1) has been leaked to BT network. The leaked Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 has the version of 14.0.4006.1010, a pre-trial version provided to premium Microsoft partners.

It’s unclear whether it is the leaked Office 2010 TP1 build will be the version that is going to be released officially by Microsoft in July 2010. And it’s still unclear yet whether Microsoft will make available publicly for Office 2010 Beta downloads, which is said to be will be having 2 betas - Beta 1 in July 2009 and another Beta 2 in November 2009.
The betas is said to be different from Technical Preview, where TP is just meant as an engineering milestone for the development of Office 2010 and related products that leading to RTM that will reach in July 2009, according to Office 2010 IT Blog. Office 2010 is expected to RTM and released as final product in March 2010, with the exception of Exchange Server 2010, where Exchange Server 2010 beta already available from official download links.
Important note is that Office2010 TP 1 is still in early stage of development, and may contain bugs, although most individual programs such as Word 2010 and Excel 2010 are usable in everyday life. It’s also interesting to know that Office 2007, the predecessor of Office 2010, is version 12. Office 2010 will be version 14, skipping version 13, the number that Microsoft assumes may be not so lucky.

If you have experienced installing Symantec Antivirus corportate edtion, then you might have come across the term  "Managed and Unmanaged Clients". What is it actually?
Managed and Unmanaged Clients
You may have two types of installations in your school / workplace: Managed and Unmanaged clients. It is recommended that whenever possible, you set up the clients in your district as Managed.

Managed Clients receive their updates directly from their Primary (or Secondary) Server whenever new definitions come out. The Primary/Secondary Server can also view information on managed clients (for example when scans have been done, whether viruses have been found, what action was taken, etc…). The Server may also initiate a scan on a machine it manages. All clients installed on Windows can be set up as Managed Clients.

Unmanaged Clients receive their updates through LiveUpdate on a scheduled basis. You must configure the machine to connect to Symantec’s LiveUpdate server at regular intervals to determine if new definitions are available. These machines are not visible to the Primary/Secondary Servers in your district. DOS, MacOS and OS/2 can only be configured as Unmanaged Clients.
Symantec AntiVirus can protect your computer from destructive programs known as viruses and Trojan horses, and can protect against malicious Active X and Java applets. Version 10.1 (+) also provides Spyware prevention and removal capabilities.

Folder Redirection is one of the undiscovered gems amongst the myriad of Microsoft Group Policies. First, configure the file locations of saved files and secondly, master folder redirection, the result will be greater efficiency for both you and your users.
Let us remind ourselves of where Microsoft Office programs save their files. By default, all Word and Excel files are directed to the My Documents folder. What do people do? In Word or Excel, they change the paths under Tools Menu, amend File Locations to point to their home directory. To complete the circle, the administrator must map a network drive to the user's home directory on the server.
Perhaps now you can see what I mean by saving time? In one fell swoop, you can configure a Group Policy which redirects the My Documents to the server and forget about mapping network drives for home directories.

Folder Redirection can be achieved to the following folders.
  • Application Data
  • Desktop
  • My Documents
  • Start Menu

Application Data Group Policy - Folder Redirection
What we are configuring here is client side caching. My view is that normally, clients can adequately cache their own programs locally. This Application Data setting is different from the Folder Redirection for the 'My Documents'. Perhaps caching is one of those Group Policies that you only need for laptops.

Ok, now let us move on to more important policies: Desktop and My Documents.

DesktopGroup Policy - Folder Redirection
There is a knack to configuring all these 4 redirection settings. At first, it seems as though there are no policies in the container. However, if you right click one of the yellow folders, for example 'Desktop' and select Properties, then a rich selection of settings comes into view.
From the first menu, select Target, now drop down the Settings box and choose: 'Advanced' - Specify Location for various user groups'. Choose 'Advanced' where you want all people to whom this policy applies to have their own desktop. In real life the 'Basic' setting may be better for the Desktop, while 'Advanced is more appropriate for the 'My Documents' folder.

If you are organized, then you would have shared out the redirect folder on the server. However even if you haven't, you can still choose the group you intend to redirect. As you share out the folder on the server, so the path changes to the famous %UserName%. Permissions permitting, the subfolders are created automatically thanks to %UserName%.

My DocumentsFolder Redirection Settings
Whilst the 'My Documents' folder is probably the most import redirection setting, the principles are much the same as the previous folders. What I would like to concentrate on here is the Settings Tab.
Once again, in Windows Server 2003, Microsoft have thought of everything. What I particularly like is the control you have over moving the files, and there are even options for what do to if the policy is removed.

Finally, at the bottom you have decisions on what do about the My Pictures sub folder.

Start Menu
The start menu uses the same technology as the other folders. However, your strategy for the Start Menu is likely to be different from the strategy for Folder Redirection. Therefore, I suggest that for Start Menu settings that you point everyone in the group to the same folder on the Windows server. The tactic is then to fill this folder with Start Menu icons. There is no need for the %UserName% variable, instead why not give all the users in the group, the same Start Menu experience.

Where you have subfolders off the Start Menu, no worries, like well behaved children, they follow their parent folders automatically!

The Group Policy Update (GPUpdate) utility lets you update the group policies on a computer. Use this utility as a replacement for the now obsolete /refreshpolicy command line switch for the SecEdit utility.
Using this utility ensures that essential group policy changes appear on a computer, especially systems that are on 24 hours per day.

This utility uses the following syntax:
GPUpdate [/Target:{Computer | User}] [/Force] [/Wait:] [/Logoff] [/Boot] [/Sync]

The following list describes each of the command line arguments.

/Target:{Computer | User} Specifies that the utility updates only user or computer policy settings. The default is to refresh both user and computer policy settings.

/Force Reapplies all policy settings, even those that haven’t changed. Normally, the utility only applies new settings. This command line switch ensures that the system has all of the current policies, even if a policy was accidentally changed.

/Wait:value Determines the number of seconds the utility waits for policy processing to finish. The default setting is 600 seconds. You can cause the utility to end immediately by using a value of 0. A value of –1 forces the utility to wait indefinitely for the policy processing to complete.

Use the –1 option when you want to ensure the policies are in place before rebooting the system. Policy processing continues in the background even if the utility ends.

/Logoff Forces the system to log off after the utility finishes refreshing the system policies.  Using this option ensures the user sees the new policy settings. You must use this feature to install client-side extension policies that don’t refresh in the background, but do refresh when the user logs in.
For example, you’ll need to use this technique for software installation and folder redirection policies. The utility ignores the command line switch when there aren’t any policies that require a logoff to implement.
/Boot Forces a reboot for situations similar to the /Logoff command line switch. However,
this command line switch affects those policy updates that require a reboot, rather than a simple logoff. As with the /Logoff command line switch, the utility ignores this command line switch when there aren’t any policies that require a reboot.

/Sync Performs the next foreground policy application synchronously (possibly reducing the
update time required for group policies). Foreground policy applications occur at computer boot and during user logon. You can specify this command line switch with the /Target command line switch to synchronize updates for just the user or just the computer policies.
Note: When you use this command line switch, it ignores the /Force and /Wait command line switches.

It’s important to remember that the Control Panel applets are a graphical feature of Windows. Most of these applets rely on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), a host application. You’ll find that nothing in the Control Panel appears with Server Core. At first, this omission may make it seem impossible to manage Windows.
However, just about everything you need to mange Windows does appear as part of the command prompt, as you’ll discover as working with windows server 2008. For example, if you want to add or remove users, you can use the NET USER utility to do it, or create a VBScript script to perform the task. You’ll find a discussion of these techniques soon in bench3.

However, the command line isn’t quite complete. For example, you can’t change some characteristics of the GUI display using the command line feature. Of course, given that the GUI isn’t a big part of the Server Core feature, this may not even be a consideration for you. To change the GUI display, should you need to do so, you’ll have to rely on registry hacks.

The point is that the omissions generally affect something that you won’t use a lot in Server Core and you probably won’t notice they’re missing. One omission you’ll definitely notice is that it’s harder to install applications in Server Core. You won’t find the familiar Add or Remove Programs applet in Server Core, but you still have a number of methods of working with applications at your disposal using the command line in this case.

The Control Panel admittedly contains a number of applets you’ll never need in Server Core, so it’s impossible to miss them. For example, you won’t have to worry about managing your game controller because Server Core isn’t suited to the task. In addition, you can’t really use Server Core for database management, so the lack of a Data Sources (ODBC) applet in the Administrative Tools folder of the Control Panel isn’t much of a concern.

(ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity.) Because Server Core lacks any form of Internet Explorer, you also won’t need to worry about the Automatic Updates applet. All of these omitted applets don’t have a use in Server Core, so Microsoft doesn’t provide any means to perform the related tasks at the command line either.

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study Judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese Judo Master Sensei. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the Sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the Sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out.

He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. “No,” the Sensei insisted, “Let him continue.” Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and Sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”
“You won for two reasons,” the Sensei answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of Judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

Windows Server 2008 is a significant upgrade from Windows Server 2003, and most especially from Windows 2000 Server. There are many reasons for saying this, but here are
some of the outstanding ones:

  1. It is easier to configure and manage. Windows Server 2008 has added Server Manager to replace several tools in prior versions of Windows Server to create a single, unified management interface to install, configure, and control all the roles on the server.

  2.  It offers better security. Windows Server 2008 considerably enhances security to protect the entire network through improvements in authenticating the user, controlling user access, securing stored data, securing data transmission, and managing security.

  3.  It is a more powerful web server. Internet Information Services Version 7 (IIS 7) provides a comprehensive platform with new and enhanced web services for building, delivering, and managing web applications with improved security.

  4.  It offers easier and more secure remote access. Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 has added two new modules, Terminal Services Gateway and Terminal Services RemoteApps, that increase the security with which a remote computer can access a local area network (LAN) and that greatly improve the experience of remotely executing an application.

  5.  It substantially enhances the ability to customize a server. The Server Manager’s role selection allows you to specify only those roles, role services, and features that you want installed, thereby shrinking the components that require computer resources and management and that can be attacked.

  6.  It provides a new command-line environment. Windows Server 2008’s PowerShell allows you a much greater and more powerful ability to configure and control the operating system without using the graphical user interface (GUI). This allows Windows Server 2008 to have an installation option of just the server core without the GUI and with only some of the roles.

Canadian universities are largely publicly-funded; they enjoy a high degree of academic autonomy.

Canada is a great country with a relatively low population and large size. There are six time zones, and both English and French are the official languages. There are over 90 universities, and most of them maintain a fine quality. The tuition fees are in general less than those in the U.S.

There are several other educational institutions operating at different levels in diverse areas. Facilities exist for work experience through part-time jobs. No wonder, thousands of international students choose Canada as their destination. The atmosphere is multicultural, offering excellent opportunity for developing a truly global outlook. The quality of life is good.

Many universities offer the option to live on-campus in residences. You have to apply for on-campus housing. The student adviser would normally provide information on off-campus housing as well.
Fig: Time Zones In Canada

You would be allowed to work on campus as in a library without a formal work permit and earn money. Universities permit off-campus work up to 20 hours a week during the school year and full-time during study breaks.

This helps you not only to earn income but to gain quality work experience. For this facility, you should have a work permit. Such permits have validity during the tenure of your study permit. You have to get your Social Insurance Number (SIN) if you need to work in Canada or to have access to government programmes and benefits. You have to submit an application for the number, in the prescribed form downloadable from the web site www.servicecanada.gc.ca, along with a nominal processing fee.

Canadian universities are largely publicly-funded; they enjoy a high degree of academic autonomy. The academic year is usually from September to May. There would be semester or trimester systems. Each university has its own norms for entry qualifications to different programmes of study.

The attainments of each student would be assessed individually for the purpose of admission. The Canadian educational institutions are familiar with the qualifications in most other countries including India.

For Indians, who have passed the 12th standard examination would get admission to the undergraduate programmes. Our Bachelor’s degree and scores in GRE would normally enable you to enter a ‘graduate’ programme in Canada. Final decisions in the matter are taken by individual universities or other institutions. Normally, undergraduate applications will have to be submitted by January-March in the year of admission.
You will have to see whether a university offers programmes in English or French and make an appropriate choice. You may be asked to sit in a French language test by the university, if you choose the French medium.

The universities offer a wide range of courses and award undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, professional degrees and certificates. The assessment of a student’s performance is not pivoted on a single annual examination. It is based on the results in assignments, classroom presentations, projects, periodical tests, and term papers.

AUCC (The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, 350 Albert Street, suite 600, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 1B1, Ph: 613-563-1236; Site: www.aucc.ca; e-mail: info@aucc.ca) ensures research-enriched quality in the university education system, interaction with industry, information sharing, facilitation of scholarships, and recognition of the qualifications at the global level. The provincial authorities also have measures for quality assurance. This dual system guarantees quality of your university education in Canada.

You can reach a directory of Canadian universities and colleges through the web site www.cicic.ca. You can know whether a university stands authorised to grant degrees of diplomas by going through the listing in the directory. Detailed information on the programmes in any university or college can be drawn from the concerned web site or from the university or college calendar, which will be sent to you on request to the admission office.

The calendars usually highlight not only the programmes, but the entrance qualifications, facilities for accommodation, tuition fees, scholarships, and matters of interest to prospective students.

Clarification of any point of doubt may be obtained from the following addresses also.

Which are the top universities?
There is no official ranking of the Canadian universities. There is a group of leading research-intensive universities in Canada, known as the Group of Thirteen. These universities in the group are held in high esteem. They often offer joint research programmes.

University of Alberta, Edmonton; University of British Columbia, Vancouver; University of Calgary, Dalhousie University; Halifax Université Laval, Quebec City; McGill University; Montreal McMaster University; Hamilton; Université de Montréal; University of Ottawa; Queen’s University; Kingston;University of Toronto; University of Waterloo; University of Western Ontario; Simon Fraser, Acadia, and York are some of the other universities rated high.
It may be remembered that certain universities may have excellent facilities for certain disciplines. But they may not be equally good in other areas.
So there is not much sense in being carried away by the rankings published by interested organisations.

You will have to study each university in your mind taking into account factors such as the reputation built through years of proven work, infrastructural facilities, quality of faculty, noted alumni and the positions reached by them.

Particular emphasis should be laid in going into the details of the department you intend to join.

The web sites of the universities or colleges would normally give you the basic information you need.

A group of frogs were hopping contentedly through the woods, going about their froggy business, when two of them fell into a deep pit. All of the other frogs gathered around the pit to see what could be done to help their companions.
When they saw how deep the pit was, the rest of the dismayed group agreed that it was hopeless and told the two frogs in the pit that they should prepare themselves for their fate, because they were as good as dead.

Unwilling to accept this terrible fate, the two frogs began to jump with all of their might. Some of the frogs shouted into the pit that it was hopeless, and that the two frogs wouldn’t be in that situation if they had been more careful, more obedient to the froggy rules, and more responsible.

The other frogs continued sorrowfully shouting that they should save their energy and give up, since they were already as good as dead. The two frogs continued jumping as hard as they could, and after several hours of desperate effort were quite weary.

Finally, one of the frogs took heed to the calls of his fellows. Spent and disheartened, he quietly resolved himself to his fate, lay down at the bottom of the pit, and died as the others looked on in helpless grief. The other frog continued to jump with every ounce of energy he had, although his body was wracked with pain and he was completely exhausted.

His companions began a new, yelling for him to accept his fate, stop the pain and just die. The weary frog jumped harder and harder and - wonder of wonders! Finally leapt so high that he sprang from the pit.

Amazed, the other frogs celebrated his miraculous freedom and then gathering around him asked, “Why did you continue jumping when we told you it was impossible?” Reading their lips, the astonished frog explained to them that he was deaf, and that when he saw their gestures and shouting, he thought they were cheering him on. What he had perceived as encouragement inspired him to try harder and to succeed against all odds.

This simple story contains a powerful lesson. Your encouraging words can lift someone up and help him or her make it through the day. Your destructive words can cause deep wounds; they may be the weapons that destroy someone’s desire to continue trying - or even their life. Your destructive, careless word can diminish someone in the eyes of others, destroy their influence and have a lasting impact on the way others respond to them.

A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!” To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!”
Curious, he yells: “Who are you?”
He receives the answer: “Who are you?”
And then he screams to the mountain: “I admire you!”
The voice answers: “I admire you!”
Angered at the response, he screams: “Coward!”
He receives the answer: “Coward!”

He looks to his father and asks: “What’s going on?” The father smiles and says: “My son, pay attention.” Again the man screams: “You are a champion!” The voice answers: “You are a champion!”

The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains: “People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE.” It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.

If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; Life will give you back everything you have given to it.”

“Your life is not a coincidence. It’s a reflection of you!”

Five Facebook users filed a civil lawsuit alleging that the social networking site is violating California’s privacy laws and misleading members about how their personal information is used.
Lawsuit filed against Facebook in Orange County Superior Court, asks for damages and attorney’s fees and includes a request for a jury trial.
“We see no merit to this suit and we plan to fight it,” – FaceBook Spokesman.
The complaint alleges that Facebook violates California privacy and online privacy laws by disseminating personal information posted by users to third parties. The lawsuit also alleges that Facebook engages in data mining and harvesting without fully disclosing those practices to its members.
It was filed on behalf of several individuals, including a professional photographer, two children under age 13, a user of the original Facebook and a Los Angeles-based actress and model.
Privacy concerns have been a thorny issue for Facebook, which has grown to more than 200 million users.
From The History:
The Palo Alto, California-based company announced earlier this year it was tweaking its privacy controls and giving users a hand in determining various policies after tens of thousands of members protested over who controls the information they share on the site. The social networking site said in February it would allow users to review, comment and vote on changes to privacy, ownership and sharing before they are put into place.
And in late 2007, a tracking tool called “Beacon” caught Facebook caught users off-guard by broadcasting information about their activities at other Web sites, including their purchase of holiday gifts for those who could see the information. The company ultimately allowed users to turn Beacon off.

To survive the recession and position themselves to grow after it ends, software companies must sell to the world and not hold back from "bold" moves.
Software companies need to have a global presence to be where the action is -- and can't shy away from making "bold" moves even in the recession-- Accenture.
As Western markets slow and their workforces age, software manufacturing -- and hence capital -- are migrating toward Asia and Eastern Europe," the consultancy and technology outsourcer said in its 2008 Global Software Study. "The primary driver of this shift is not so much labor as it is growing markets and the need to reduce risk by building and buying in multiple locations.
In mature markets, such as the U.S., software companies will make more money from maintenance contracts than from new software sales. In contrast, in emerging markets, software companies will earn more from sales than from maintenance contracts, Accenture said.
Companies should also make sure that they are actually getting the maintenance fees they've earned.

"Such an assessment can result in a boon to the top line, as one major software vendor discovered: A study the company conducted of its licenses worldwide revealed that it was owed more than $1 billion in license fees," Accenture said.

Missing out on licensing fees continues to be a significant problem, Accenture said, citing a recent study by the Business Software Alliance that claimed that the software industry lost over $50 billion to piracy in 2008.

But companies must be careful about extracting cash from customers during hard times, according to Pekka Huttunen, director of Accenture's software industry practice.

"This could be the right time to build tools and best practices so that companies are in a position to take more control of licensing when the economy returns," he told InternetNews.com.

He added that software providers could deliver technology to help companies with software asset management, gaining insight into usage while also providing that insight to the customer.

Asia Is The Best For Offshoring:
Meanwhile, there's also the allure of moving offshore, as software companies find better markets and younger, cheaper employees in Asia and Eastern Europe, Accenture said.

"Software development is moving offshore and the availability of software developers is declining in developed nations," the company's report said.

Yet following the trends may not work for everyone. That some companies see both economic and moral value in keeping software production close -- "inshoring" or "nearshoring".

"For instance, in the U.S., there are areas where companies may have access to a relatively high skill labor pool at a lower price." The companies may also be motivated by the moral value of helping local, disadvantaged people.

Be bold
However bad conditions may seem, software companies should remain aggressive and not focus on cost cutting, Accenture said in a second report.

"Accenture's research into the 1990-1991 recession and the dot-com meltdown reveals a clear distinction between enterprises that followed a strategy of managing their cost structures and strengthening their strategic positions and those that did not," the company said. "In fact, those that took the bolder path outperformed their industry peers for six years following the recession."

Tough times help make change happen faster and force innovation.
For some, being bold may require hopping on the latest trends. For instance, Accenture said software buying patterns will change as companies become more comfortable with Software as a Service (SaaS). Accenture also said that companies that have gone through a painful experience with at least one licensed software installation are more likely to embrace SaaS.

Huttunen said that SaaS could enable software companies to gain more customers, though it also might erode the revenue earned per customer.

Another realm for growth is around Web 2.0 technologies. For instance, as the Facebook generation enters the workforce, companies will be forced to adopt new social and collaborative technologies, while software makers will work to provide the right security for the right applications, according to Accenture.

Even the most aggressive companies will need to take a close look at their own software portfolios and decide which products will sell and which products will not.

Huttunen also explained that many software companies have acquired technology that is not yet fully integrated into the main product, so employees currently deployed to canceled projects could be re-deployed to integration.

In making acquisitions during tough times, companies could follow Oracle's example, the reports said. Its "acquisitions of PeopleSoft, Siebel, and Sun Microsystems have dramatically increased its presence in several of the areas most coveted by business software manufacturers," Accenture said.

But Huttunen warned that some companies that made acquisitions a few years ago may have paid a price that was based on revenue targets that will be difficult to meet.

And when it comes to hitting revenue targets, the channel will be more important than ever. Accenture cited Citrix's success in this area as a model for others to follow.

"Citrix currently has about 6,200 channel and alliance partners (including Microsoft, HP and Dell) in more than 100 countries," Accenture said.

Companies will need both a direct sales channel and an indirect sales channel, it added, citing two companies with big plans.

"SAP and Avaya are investing particularly heavily in their indirect sales capabilities," Accenture said.

Added Huttunen, "Even though these are challenging times, there are opportunities for software companies. Current conditions favor those vendors looking to provide more value with their software."

Despite the difficult conditions facing the industry, it may well emerge stronger, he suggested.
Tough times help make change happen faster and force innovation. It's human nature that if you can do without change, most of us choose not to have the change.

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

“We told them so.”
“Crazy men and their crazy dreams.”
“It’s foolish to chase wild visions.”

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife’s arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do.

It seemed foolish but the project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man’s indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances.

It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face.
The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are. Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence.

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston and walk timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President’s outer office.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn’t even deserve to be in Cambridge.

“We want to see the president,” the man said softly.

“He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary snapped.

“We’ll wait,” the lady replied.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn’t and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted. “Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they’ll leave,” she said to him.

He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office.

The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple. The lady told him, “We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus.”

The president wasn’t touched.... He was shocked. “Madam,” he said, gruffly, “we can’t put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery.”

“Oh, no,” the lady explained quickly. “We don’t want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard.”

The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, and then exclaimed, “A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard.” For a moment the lady was silent.

The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now. The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, “Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded.

The president’s face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who they think can do nothing.

THE WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING:A Wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to the vigilance of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so it put it on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep.

The Lamb that belonged to the sheep, whose skin the Wolf was wearing, began to follow the Wolf in the Sheep’s clothing; so, leading the Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her, and for some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.

Appearances are deceptive.
