How to change the default location of Libraries through group policy or through a logon script to point to the roaming profile location (e.g. Make the Documents Library redirect to '\\SERVERNAME\profiles\COMPANY\08\%username%\Documents' instead of 'C:\Users\%username%\Documents') and make the link in the Start Menu below the user's display picture redirect to '\\SERVERNAME\profiles\COMPANY\08\%username%'?

Solution:
Really there is no magic here, you just apply a document redirection policy. Once that policy is applied their documents would be redirected to \\SERVER\profiles\COMPANY\08\%username%\Documents

There is no changes in windows vista and windows 7 environment for this. Windows 7 works the same as vista.
Folder Redirection is one of the undiscovered gems amongst the myriad of Microsoft Group Policies. First, configure the file locations of saved files and secondly, master folder redirection, the result will be greater efficiency for both you and your users. A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarreling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks.
When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it. He next opened the faggot, took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into his sons’ hands, upon which they broke them easily.
He then addressed them in these words: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.”

Outlook Express Could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft Support for further assistance. (0x800C012E).
Possible reason for this error is the user to whom you are configuring Outlook express does not have sufficent folder rights or if the user does not belong to Administrator Group.

Solution:
Find where Outlook Store Folder Is. To determine the location of your store, On Outlook Express | click Tools| Options| Maintenance| Store folder.

Since it is understood that you cant open the outlook express due to the above error, you can find the store folder either

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
or in very rare situation it will be
C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}
or  to any other specific location if you changed your store folder location.

Check if the user is having sufficent right for that folder, and if the user is not having administration rights, make sure you give full rights for that particular user in the store folder.

Default Store Folder Location:
All of Outlook mail folders and messages, and all of your subscribed newsgroups and messages are stored in one folder called the store root, or store root folder, or store folder, and in at least one place in OE, the Store root directory.
{GUID} is the Global Unique IDentifier (technical jargon for a unique long number) used to specify an Identity. Depending on your operating system and upgrade history, your store folder might be located elsewhere.

How to make all your files and folders to open fast?
Warning: before you try to modify windows registry, learn how to backup windows registry. Also try to have a backup of your registry at this stage before you proceed. Read More On How To Backup Windows Registry.
  1. Go to run and type in Regedit (Click OK) You should see something like the below screen shot:
  2. Find “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\”
  3. Select “MenuShowDelay”
  4. Right click and select “Modify’
  5. Reduce the number to around “100″
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to “0″ but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them – well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood.

Next autumn, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying in a “V” formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are heading the same way we are.

When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.

It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

What message do we give when we honk from behind?
Finally - and this is important - when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of the formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies; and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their own group.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.

My friend was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked along, he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer, he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean. As my friend approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had washed up on the beach, and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water. My friend was puzzled.

He approached the man and said. “Good evening, friend. I was wondering what you are doing.”

“I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see its low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen.”

“I understand,” my friend replied, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don’t you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference?”
The local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, “Made a difference to that one!”

Fundamentally, it's the IT department's responsibility to ensure the security of the PC assets, prevent the use of unlicensed software, and enforce compliance with government regulations and internal policies. Most companies will find that the only way to do this is to enact a new policy of restricting the number of users who have administrator privileges. Luckily, you'll find this much easier to do on Windows Vista And Windows 7. Read more: http://www.bench3.com/2010/08/get-best-results-using-user-account.html#ixzz0xxbd4XVH
Levels of Desktop Lockdown
Even with these improvements (mentioned in my early post) in the Windows 7 / Vista OS, not every organization will be able to deploy all of their Windows 7 / Vista desktops with standard user permissions. Some organizations may have applications that still require administrator privileges or they may have users, such as developers, who need to install their own software.

That's OK. Windows 7 / Vista allows multiple levels of desktop control, configurable through user account selection and Group Policy, all of which provide more manageability and security than a full administrator account on Windows XP. Most system settings relevant to UAC settings can be found in the Security Policy Editor (secpol.msc), which is shown in Figure below (Security Policy Editor).
Figure : Security Policy Editor (Click the image for a larger view)
  • The first level of control is called Admin Approval Mode. This mode reduces the threat of some types of malware attacks by starting programs with standard user privileges by default and alerting the user if a program is attempting to run with administrator privileges.
In this mode you can perform audits through the event log when the user runs a program that requires administrator rights. But keep in mind that while an application may run with standard user privileges, this mode doesn't provide the same security as a true standard user account. The user still has administrator privileges and can change policy settings, install unapproved software, and allow powerful malware such as a rootkit to be installed.

  • The next level builds upon the first, but uses Group Policy to restrict elevation to programs that are signed with a certificate that is in the Trusted Publishers store.
This can help prevent unsigned malware from obtaining administrator privileges and can prevent users from installing arbitrary software. However, when running with administrator accounts, savvy, unscrupulous users, or sophisticated malware could disable the policy, at least temporarily, to perform unauthorized actions. Therefore, these first two levels should be used as interim measures while resolving any issues that prevent you from issuing true standard user accounts.
  • The next level of security comes from removing users from administrator accounts and making them standard users.
One feature of UAC is called the Over the Shoulder Credentials Dialog, which standard users will see by default if they start a program that requires administrator credentials. Standard users are blocked from performing that action, but if they know the username and password of an administrator, they may enter it and continue the action. A typical scenario in which this feature could be used involves a traveling laptop user.

If, for example, the user has an urgent need to install a piece of software while he is on the road, he could call the helpdesk who could provide the password for a local administrator account, which the user could enter and allow the program to run (see Figure below, Requiring an Admin Password). If you provide the administrator password to the user, I recommend that you have processes and tools in place to reset the administrator password when the user reconnects to the network, and that you log the programs that have been run using the administrator credentials. Also be aware that if the PC has been infected by malware, the administrator may be tricked into giving demonstrators privileges to malware that they did not intend to.
Figure [(c) http://technet.microsoft.com ] Requiring an Admin Password (Click the image for a larger view)

You also have the option of disabling the credentials dialog using Group Policy. Set the User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users setting to Automatically deny elevation requests (see Figure below, Application Blocked by Group Policy ). This is the way we recommend that most enterprises that deploy standard user desktop should configure UAC. Most organizations would do this to prevent the user from calling helpdesk for a password that the IT department doesn't want them to have.
Figure [(c) http://technet.microsoft.com ] Application Blocked by Group Policy (Click the image for a larger view)

For the strongest level of desktop lockdown you can use UAC and standard user accounts combined with Windows Software Restriction Policies (SRP). With SRP, enterprises can go an extra step and prevent any software from running that they did not specifically allow. SRP is designed to block the execution of software unless it meets specific criteria based on Authenticode® certificate, hash, path, or Internet Zone.

SRP is managed through Group Policy, and you can create a very powerful policy to prevent the installation and execution of non-approved programs with little work. A typical policy might disallow all executables except any found in these paths: %WINDIR% and %PROGRAMFILES%, and apply polices to all users except administrators.

With this policy in place, the IT staff can still install whatever software programs it wants into the Program Files directory without having to add each .exe to a whitelist (a list of accepted items). And since the standard user does not have access to these directories, he or she cannot place it somewhere that it will execute.

You may have noticed there was no mention of the Power User group. That's because the Power User group has been removed from Windows 7 / Vista. Some organizations used the Power Users group in an attempt to limit administrator privileges. While making someone a power user may prevent him from making unapproved system configurations, he (or malware running with power user credentials) may be able to gain additional rights and permissions and even complete administrative credentials. For that reason, Windows  7 / Vista has administrator and Standard user as the two primary account types.

Desktop Management Infrastructure
Using File and Registry Virtualization, the new Driver Store infrastructure, and the other features I discussed will make it much easier for you to deploy Windows 7 / Vista desktops with standard user accounts. Even with these techniques, however, you will not be able to support a standard user environment completely unless you have the management infrastructure—tools, processes, and people—to support users who cannot do some things on their own. Some of the issues you need to consider are:

Software Installation:
If users can't install software on their own, you need to provide another way. One way, which doesn't require any other management software, is to use Group Policy. With Group Policy, you can add a program to the Add/Remove programs list. If a user installs a program using this method it will launch with the elevated permissions needed for the user to complete the installation. For a richer solution you could also use SMS or a similar product. Some solutions even allow you to create self-service Web portals where standard users can pick and choose the software they want to install.

Software Updating:
You'll need to have a way to install updates on your PCs, other than sending out an e-mail that says, "Please install this update!" To manage and deploy most Microsoft updates you can use Windows Server Update Services, which is a free download for Windows Server. To deploy a broader range of updates, again, you may consider a desktop management product such as SMS.

Support Processes and Staffing:
When a user calls the helpdesk about something that is causing a performance problem or wants to install something new, in many cases you won't be able just talk them through the process over the phone, since they may not have permissions. Your IT department will need to make greater use of remote assistance and remote administration tools to diagnose issues and change settings. Even Windows Remote Assistance will work differently because logged-in standard users cannot approve the prompts for actions that require administrator privilege, though helpdesk staff could use Remote Desktop to make administrative changes remotely.

Workflow For Installing A Trail Software:
It will be critical to have clear, efficient processes for handling policy exceptions. Let's say someone in the marketing department needs to install a trial version of a new graphic design tool she is evaluating for her department. Who gives the approval to install that software—her manager, her director, or the CIO? How will it get installed and how long will she have to wait? We suggest creating a simple approval workflow that is integrated with the helpdesk issue tracking system. A basic workflow could be:
  1. User submits request to install a program and the link to the installation program (on their local hard drive or in their CD tray), and confirms that the software was not obtained illegally and is not being used for malicious purposes.
  2. Request is sent to manager for approval.
  3. Request is routed to application lead in IT department who can check to ensure there are no known compatibility problems, perform a virus scan, and make sure that the company has not already purchased a site license for that program or a similar program from another vendor.
  4. Request is forwarded to a support technician to remotely initiate the installation and notify the user when the software is ready for use.
To create the workflow interface you could either script dynamic Web pages or obtain a commercial helpdesk or issue-tracking package. You will also require different staffing for a managed versus an unmanaged environment. Hopefully, you will need fewer technicians to physically diagnose or reimage unstable or infected PCs. However, you may need to initially allocate additional staff to software packaging and deployment.

Over the long run, you should experience lower support costs as machines remain stable longer, but initially you may experience an increase in helpdesk calls from users asking for help with configuration. The helpdesk calls will taper off after you configure your desktop images and group policies with the settings users need and expect.

Its Psychological, Not Technology:
The final hurdle is not technological, but psychological. Some users may have an adverse reaction to the idea of not having administrator privileges. But I believe most users won't notice a difference. And if you deploy Windows 7 / Vista at the same time that you enforce standard user accounts, the productivity benefits of the integrated desktop search, the new Aero (glass) user interface, and the improvements for mobile users will outweigh any inconveniences that come from not being an administrator. However, if poor processes cause people to wait for weeks to get permission to install a piece of software, then you can expect to have some unhappy employees.

Fewer users running with administrator privileges is a worthy goal in most IT organizations. But while IT administrators generally agree that restricting users to a standard user account is the way to go, about 80 percent deploy their desktops with admin accounts, making those machines more susceptible to malware and harder to manage. But it's not that easy to avoid the admin account. The potential obstacles you'll face if you try are numerous.

Why Providing Administration Rights Rather Than Non-Admin Rights?
First, there's application compatibility. Because many applications were written and tested using administrator accounts, they may not even run under standard accounts. (This is most often the case because the applications attempt to write to restricted areas such as the Program Files directory or HKLM registry keys.)

Second, earlier versions of Windows were overly restrictive about which settings users were allowed to configure. Standard users could not change the time zone, power settings, connect to secure wireless networks, or install ActiveX controls without calling the helpdesk, which has associated costs.

Fortunately Windows Seven and Vista addresses these concerns. And even if your users don't have admin accounts, User Account Control (UAC) and other management technologies in Windows 7 and Vista make it easier to support and manage those desktops, promote higher productivity for standard users, and do it all without the looser security that results when you modify access control lists (ACLs)—the usual method of providing users greater, customized access. Let's look more closely at how Windows 7 and Vista alleviates some of your access control issues.

Virtualization Improves Compatibility
Many applications that will not run as a standard user on Windows XP will be able to run without modification on Windows 7 and Vista because of the File and Registry Virtualization capabilities. In Windows XP, many applications break when they attempt to write to protected areas of the file system and registry that the standard user is not permitted to access. Windows 7 and Vista will improve compatibility by redirecting writes (and subsequent file or registry reads) to a special location within that user's profile.
For example, if an application attempts to write to C:\program files\contoso\settings.ini and the user doesn't have permission to write to that directory, the write will be redirected to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramFiles\contoso\settings.ini. If an application attempts to write to HKLM\Software\Contoso\ the action would automatically be redirected to HKCU\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\Software\Contoso.
Figure 1 outlines the redirection process. In addition, the Certified for Windows 7 / Vista Software Logo Program will require that an application will run as standard user without requiring virtualization; if it doesn't, the logo will not be awarded to the application.
Figure 1 File and Registry Virtualization Process

Standard Users Can Do More
In Windows 7 / Vista, standard user accounts have been given additional privileges so users can perform common tasks without helpdesk support and without having the full set of permissions provided by the administrator account. The new privileges include the ability to view the system clock and calendar, to change the time zone, to modify wireless network security settings, to change power management settings, and to download and install critical updates from Windows Update.

Additionally, disk defragmentation is an automatically scheduled process in Windows 7 / Vista. Actions that do require administrator privileges are marked with a shield icon, so users can see what configuration changes they can and can't make.

ActiveX Control Installation
ActiveX controls can be particularly tricky to manage centrally because they may update frequently and they need to be repackaged before they can be distributed through a software distribution program like Systems Management Server (SMS) or through Group Policy. Windows 7 / Vista includes an optional component called the ActiveX Installer Service that allows IT administrators to use Group Policy to specify Web sites from which standard users will be allowed to install ActiveX controls.

To use the ActiveX Installer Service, do the following:
  1. Enable the ActiveX Installer Service on the client computers. You can enable the service through the Windows Features Control Panel applet or when you configure your desktop image.
  2. In Active Directory Group Policy, in Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components, select ActiveX Installer Service. Select Enable. Now after the policy is replicated to the users, they will be able to install controls from the sites you specify.
Since ActiveX controls and other executable code could perform malicious tasks, use this feature judiciously; use it only for vendors you trust and only on intranet sites that are under strict control.

The ActiveX Control Installer Service is also integrated with the Windows 7 / Vista Eventing Infrastructure, so you can be notified automatically if there are ActiveX controls your users need to install. When a standard user tries to install a control that has not been approved, the service creates an event in the Application Log. In Windows 7 / Vista, tasks can be configured to automatically send an e-mail or execute another program as soon as an event is triggered. Then you know when a user needs a control and you can add the site to Group Policy without the user experiencing significant down time. With Windows 7 / Vista you can also subscribe to events from multiple machines across your enterprise and generate a list of all the controls your users are trying to install.

Hardware Device Driver Installation
Concerns that users will be unable to install device drivers they need when traveling is another reason administrator permissions remain popular, particularly for laptop users. The new Driver Store infrastructure in Windows 7 / Vista alleviates this hurdle by allowing flexible control over devices that standard users can install. First, you can prepopulate the Driver Store with trusted drivers so users can install permitted devices as they need them. Second, you can use Group Policy to give standard users permissions to install classes of devices, such as printers, or even specific device hardware IDs, such as permitted flash drives.

Since the Windows 7 / Vista Driver Store is a trusted cache of in-the-box and third-party drivers on the hard drive of each client machine, users may install them without administrator privileges. To stage drivers in the Driver Store, you can either inject them into offline images or dynamically update drivers to online clients over the network. For offline images, use Package Manager to seamlessly stage drivers in the Driver Store.

For online images, use command-line utilities such as pnputil.exe or DevCon in conjunction with software distribution applications to add, update, or delete drivers in the Driver Store. To further streamline and add flexibility to the process of staging drivers, Windows 7 / Vista allows IT departments and third parties the ability to sign driver package integrity.

By default, only users with administrator rights can add new drivers to the Driver Store. But there is a critical need for users, particularly mobile users, to install devices like printers while they're on the go. With new Group Policy settings, Windows 7 / Vista enables you to give standard users the flexibility needed to install permitted devices even if drivers aren't already staged in the Driver Store.

To delegate device driver staging privileges,
  1. Open the Group Policy interface and
  2. Navigate to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Driver Installation | Allow non-administrators to install drivers for these devices.
  3. You'll need to know the GUID for the device classes you want standard users to stage and install.
  4. You can find device classes online at MSDN or
  5. If the device is installed on your machine, go to the Device Manager | Properties window.
  6. Click on the Details tab and
  7. Select the dropdown labeled Device Class GUID.
  8. You also need to make sure the certificates used to sign the drivers are already in the client machine's Trusted Publishers store, which can be managed via Group Policy.

These advances in Windows 7 / Vista now provide standard users with the needed flexibility in device installation so you can move more users to a managed desktop environment.

Users using windows 7, windows vista may come across error code " 0x80004005" while trying to share the internet connection between two or more PCs.
Asuming that the two computers are connecting to the same Wireless Router, and that both can access the Internet.
Win7 when configured on peer-to-peer Network has three types of Sharing configurations for general file and printer sharing.

HomeGroup Network = Works only between Win 7 computers. This type of configuration makes it very easy to Entry Level Users to start Network sharing.

Work Network = Basically similar to the previous methods of sharing that let you control what, how, and to whom folders would be shared with.

Public Sharing = Public Network (like Internet cafe) to reduce security risks.

For best results log to each computer's System Screen and set all the computers to be on a Network with the same name while each computer has its own unique name.
Solution:
See if your windows firewall is enabled. If not, enable Windows Firewall in Services (services.msc) and with that the Network sharing error (code: 0x80004005) will not be there.

Warning: Do not Disable UAC, firewall, antivirus, these has nothing to do with internet sharing.

Looking straight into somebody’s eyes when we are talking tells the person that we are interested, attending to what is being said and have nothing to hide. When we feel shy, it is sometimes awkward to keep this direct gaze on the interviewer.
If you find this difficult, at least try to look at the interviewer when he or she is asking you a question, even if you look elsewhere during your response. If you are being interviewed by more than one person, do not always try to include everyone in the panel in your glance. Instead, when one interviewer asks you an individual question, treat that person as though he or she is the only one interviewing you.
Learning what is expected when it comes to eye contact during a job interview can do wonders for your prospects of landing that position.
You should ensure that your behaviour cannot be perceived as flirtatious. This is not part of any job description and if your behaviour seems inappropriate, it could work against you and you may not be taken seriously as a candidate.
Research has shown that 55 per cent of this first impression is based on appearance and behaviour, which can include clothing, posture, body language and facial expressions including eye contact. Thirty-eight per cent of the impression is from the way we speak, which includes the way the voice is used, clarity of speech and accent. Only seven per cent is from the words we say.
What ever, avoid looking down to your own hands or out the window. These are the two most common mistakes made and the ones that will quickly label you as too shy or insecure.

You may have a personal preference to display zero values in a cell, or you may be using a spreadsheet that adheres to a set of format standards that requires you to hide zero values. There are several ways to display or hide zero values.
  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Button image, click Excel Options, and then click the Advanced category.
  1. Under Display options for this worksheet, select a worksheet, and then do one of the following:
    • To display zero (0) values in cells, select the Show a zero in cells that have zero value check box.
    • To display zero values as blank cells, clear the Show a zero in cells that have zero value check box.

Use a number format to hide zero values in selected cells

Follow this procedure to hide zero values in selected cells. If the value in one of these cells changes to a nonzero value, the format of the value will be similar to the general number format.
  1. Select the cells that contain the zero (0) values that you want to hide.
  1. On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click Format, and then click Format Cells.
  1. In the Category list, click Custom.
  2. In the Type box, type 0;-0;;@
 Notes
  • The hidden values appear only in the formula bar Formula bar — or in the cell if you edit within the cell — and are not printed.
  • On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click Format, and then click Format Cells.
  • To display hidden values again, select the cells, and then on the Home tab, in the Cells group, point to Format, and click Format Cells. In the Category list, click General to apply the default number format. To redisplay a date or a time, select the appropriate date or time format on the Number tab.

How to fix if Windows failed to start with the following error message.  "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000014c
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
This error applies to Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP3).
Solution:
This should only be used by someone that has a pretty good knowledge of pc's though. And I wouldn't normally hesitate to run a Repair on the OS, but what if your PC manufacturer didn't send any operating system discs with your PC?
  1. Use MiniPE Disk And boot into your system.
  2. Go to the root (C:) location of the file in question 'bootmgr' This will be an hidden file 'bootmgr' without any extension which was executing before Windows.
  3. Rename that file to 'bootmgr.wtf'
  4. Restart your machine
  5. Thats it, your machine should load normally.
I wouldn't recommend this as a permanent fix, the best solution for this problem is still to do an OS repair. But if you have no other option, this seems to have done the trick.

Optional:
  • Run CHKDSK and optionaly you can also run MBRFIX
  • Do a full virus scan on here
  • And run a bunch of integrity checks to make sure all is well
Most importantly the worst part is over.

An interview is a conversation between two or more people (the interviewer and the interviewee) where questions are asked by the interviewer to obtain information from the interviewee.
There are several reasons an interview may not go well. Many candidates who try to learn from their last interview mistakes, asking themselves – why did my last interview fail and how should I avoid this interview failure next time? Needless to say that, the way you determine and handle an interview failure, pointing out key factors and working on these points will aide in future interviews results.

This article discusses the basic reasons people fail in interviews – the first impressions in interviews as well as the basic interview failures. Here are the 10 most common reasons for failure at interview.
  1. Arriving at the interview unprepared for what is to follow.
  2. Having a sloppy appearance or too relaxed an attitude to the interview.
  3. Not showing any excitement about, or enthusiasm for, the work.
  4. Not seeming to understand the requirements of the job properly.
  5. Not showing that they have fully considered all aspects of the vacancy, eg indicating a dislike of paperwork when it is clear that this will form a large part of the job on offer.
  6. Not answering the questions fully and giving answers that are too short.
  7. Being vague about details and just providing lots of unstructured waffle in their answers.
  8. Not being clear about their skills and abilities, ie being too vague or modest.
  9. Seeming overly concerned with what they can get from the job rather than conveying exactly what they are offering.
  10. Using pretentious language or jargon instead of normal speech.
Do any of these numbered points look familiar to you? Most people have been guilty of one or more of them during interviews. Normally it is feelings of nerves that stop us from coming across at our best. We fail to hear the questions properly; lose the thread of what we are trying to say; totally forget the excellent examples that we prepared to talk about and feel embarrassed about blowing our own trumpet too much.

It is obvious that this type of behaviour is not going to help anyone get a job. However, it is useful to realise how interviews are lost so that we make sure we are aware of what not to do. Then we can concentrate on acting in a way that will ensure that we are successful.

Infringement of copyright occurs when a restricted act is carried out without the permission of the copyright owner; e.g. taking a copy of a work without permission.

Infringement is generally a civil offence and a common penalty is the award of damages and the destruction of any infringing materials. However in cases where someone is dealing in infringing copies (selling pirate materials) this is known as secondary infringement and can be a criminal offence punishable by a prison sentence. Where an act constitutes a criminal offence action can be taken by Trading Standards and other enforcement agencies as well as by the copyright owner.

The value of copyright
The framework of intellectual property legislation generally and copyright in particular as it forms a bridge between the creators and owners of copyright works, such as published content from books and magazines, and the consumer that wants to use the work.
Copyright is important because it protects the interests of the creators and those who invest in creativity. If there were no legal copyright protection, it would be difficult for creative people to make a living from their work. It would be less likely that anyone would be willing to fund the publishing of a book, the making of a film or the recording of music if there were less opportunity to earn a return and there were no protection from copying by others.
The easier it becomes to access creative works the more vital it is that we respect copyright law so that people continue to produce the creative works which add value to our lives.
By supporting copyright owners, CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) plays a part in maintaining the value of their work, thereby sustaining creativity and its benefit to all. Through protection of this sort the creative industries in the UK have been able to grow to support millions of jobs.

Obtaining copyright clearance and reducing the risk of infringement
Copyright law states that photocopying, scanning or digital re-use of an electronic publication is reproduction of copyright protected material and permission must be sought in advance to avoid infringing the copyright owners rights.

The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) is the UK organisation set up by authors and publishers to issue licences granting rights to copy extracts from books, journals, magazines and press cuttings as well as digital or electronic publications.

Licences are granted on behalf of the authors, publishers and visual creators who own the copyright. The law states that anyone wishing to copy from copyright publications requires permission from the copyright owner in advance. The easiest way to obtain permission is to buy a CLA licence.

CLA licences provide ‘blanket’ permission to enable organisations to copy from all magazines, books and journals published in the UK and over 26 international territories in return for one annual fee.

The CLA licences are available to businesses, charities, central and local government and educational establishments in the UK.

Typical activities for which an organisation would require permission include:
  • Photocopying an article from a magazine, book or journal
  • Copying or downloading an article from a digital publication
  • Photocopying or scanning an article or clipping received from a press agency
  • Making multiple copies of an article obtained from a document library
  • Storing an article on a company intranet
If any of the above are applicable to your organisation then it is highly likely that you will need a CLA licence.

If you are not sure what level of copying is carried out in your organisation then it is strongly recommended that you carry out a simple check to make sure that your organisation is not breaking the law.

Copyright is a right granted by law that gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works the ability to control ways their work is used and to earn a fair reward for that use. In the case of authors and publishers it provides a means for them to earn a living by writing and publishing. In addition to written, musical or artistic works the law also protects sound recordings and fi lms (CDs, videos and DVDs) as well as computer software and broadcasts.
Copyright are exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. Copyright does not protect ideas, only their expression or fixation. In most jurisdictions copyright arises upon fixation and does not need to be registered. - Wikipedia
Copyright is part of a family of intellectual property (IP) rights recognised under UK law. Other forms of IP that enjoy legal protection include Designs, Patents and Trademarks. Copyright law in the UK is automatic and work is legally protected the moment it is created in material form, e.g. written down or recorded. The legal owner in the first instance is the creator (author) of the work. The main exception to this is when the work is created in the course of employment and in these cases the copyright usually belongs to the employer. Copyright protection in the UK generally lasts for 70 years following the death of the author.

Rights granted by copyright law
The UK legislation governing copyright is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. The law was amended by the Copyright and Related Rights Regulations of 2003 to comply with EU Directive 2001/29/EC.

The law sets out specifi c rights that only the author of the work has the right to do. These rights can be placed into two distinct groups; economic and moral.

Economic rights are:
  • the right to make a copy
  • the right to distribute copies (publish)
  • the right to rent or lend
  • the right to perform or exhibit to the public
  • the right to transmit or broadcast
  • the right to adapt
Moral rights are:
  • the right of paternity - to be identified as the owner
  • the right of attribution - to not have the work falsely attributed
  • the right of integrity - to object to any usage that damages reputation
These nine rights are alternatively known as ‘restricted acts’ as they are acts that only the owner can authorise. The copyright owner can manage and exploit their rights by either licensing them or by assigning the rights to a third party. By assigning the rights the advertisement feature owner gives up control of them on an exclusive basis whereas licensing them allows them to authorise restricted acts on a non exclusive basis.
