Windows 7 having a problem when copying files to shares on our server (running Windows 2008 ). The file is copied but Explorer continues showing the dialog "Copying". The process cannot be killed with Task Manager and I am forced to restart manually the computer.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • You share some files or some folders on the computer.
  • Some users try to access the shared files or the shared folders from remote computers.

In this scenario, the computer that shares the files and the folders may temporarily not respond to file share requests. When this issue occurs, users cannot enumerate the shared files or the shared folders on the computer.

Note The computer that shares the files and the folders resumes responding to requests for shared resources after 4 minutes.

Solution:

The only way to avoid this kind of problem is to try this hotfix:
KB2492806 - A Windows Vista-based, Windows Server 2008-based, Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that shares some files and some folders may not respond to file share requests

Download Location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2492806

Also I found out that issuing the following commands at the Windows 7 machine solved the problem:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

I've had this problem for a while now. Sometimes when attempting to start games (not really games, also applies to certain programs), I'll see the game's executable load, along with rundll32.exe. However that's where it stops, and Rundll goes on to hog an entire core's CPU time to itself, without the game continuing to load.

Sometimes the problem goes away after a few tries, sometimes I'm forced to actually reinstall the game. Heck, the solution is sometimes totally random, I've had the problem temporarily solved once by running DirectX setup, but that only solved it for one specific game.

When I check the taskmanager, and the commandline for rundll, here's what I get:
C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\gameux.dll,GameUXShim {029de72b-57a0-4780-aeba-a7d553e82745};D:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\pol.exe;3972 now I know gameux.dll has something to do with the game explorer, the second part is the game executable in question, in this case Playonline, but I've had it with other games as well.

It sounds like Final Fantasy XI is somehow incompatible with Windows 7 at this stage. I'd try configuring the game to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP or Windows Vista. To do this, right click on the program .exe and open the Properties menu, then navigate to the compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for..." Failing that, you may want to seek support on the official forums, as we can't really support individual games here.

And compatibility mode doesn't work for all games or software's, I've tried that before. Other games that have had this problem are for example Civilisation IV and Railroad Tycoon 3.

Solution From Technet:

Here is a temporary solution: Believe it or not, I've fixed the problem for now by instructing the game explorer not to collect game usage data. Since I did that I haven't had this problem. So it leads me to suspect that the game explorer is in it on something. Judging from my experience with programming, I'm thinking when trying to launch a game, gameux.dll is called first to perform certain tasks (in this case perhaps a +1 on the game usage counter if asked to keep tabs), after which the DLLs of the game executable are loaded (that's what Rundll is for, loading DLLs).

But I think when loading and executing one function from the game explorer's DLL, rundll ends up in an endless loop internally (hence the max usage of 1 core). Since I've instruced the game explorer now to have as little to do as possible with the games as possible, not keeping tabs on usage, not downloading updates, etc etc, gameux.dll is probably loaded but not used, and rundll goes on nicely to loading the other DLLs.
Well that's my idea at least, built from experience in programming.

I've found this solution to work every time:

  • Kill the game's *.exe process, leaving rundll32.exe still running (SysInternals' procexp64.exe or procexp.exe show the process tree better than Task Manager, so it's worth downloading SysInternals Suite if you haven't already got it.  You'll see rundll32.exe as a sub-branch of the *.exe for the game.  Or, to put it another way, if you're not sure what the game's *.exe is called, it's the one above the rundll32.exe thread that's hogging all the CPU power!)
  • Restart the game.
  • Kill the rundll32.exe thread (or suspend it if you're at all a bit doubtful)

I just wanted to point out that it's safe to kill the rundll32.exe thread after the successful restart of the game.  This stops it hogging all that CPU power while you play - more performance, less heat.

As to the cause, I'm even more mystified than before.  I've tried the Game Explorer fixes and that seemed to work.  BuT one one machine, it works now for the Admin User (me and the 'serious work stuff') but not for the Guest User (games only).  Both users now have identical settings in Games Explorer but the Guest is locked off the internet, so maybe I have to connect and start each game once in that user.

Windows 7 firewall is it just like Windows XP's  where you will not be able to ping the workstation until you enable or allow ICMP. Some tells me you can "ping right out of the box". But this is not correct. The right answer is that You won’t be able to ping without enabling ICMP.

What Is ICMP:

ICMP is the Internet Control Message Protocol.

ICMP is a complementary protocol to IP (Internet Protocol). Like IP, ICMP resides on the Network Layer of the OSI Model.

ICMP is designed for sending control and test messages across IP networks.

Unlike the Transport Layer protocols TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) which operate on top of IP, ICMP exists alongside IP.

The ability to understand ICMP is a requirement for any IP-compatible network device. However, many security devices such as firewalls block or disable all or part of ICMP functionality for security purposes.

I've seen several entries regarding sp1 instalation errors, but none with this one: falat error c0000034 applying update operation

Machine is x64 (intel core i7), with 8gb mem

tried installing sp1 via windows update. there were three patches to install, one of them, sp1

did the two first, before, and then tried sp1.

It failed while rebooting (not remember the code, sorry), but i was able to do a system restore to pre-sp1.

them, got the full SP1 media from msdn, and did install it in offilne mode. Setup looked faster (of course?) and in reboot, this fatal error c0000034 appeared. But this time, no option for system restore.

if i try to enter in safe mode, i get stuck on driver loading (last loaded is classpnp.sys)

if i try to run, as seen in other threads, the sfc tool, i get a "there is a system repair pending which requires a boot to complete..." Of course, reboot just gets me to the 34 error.

As i cannot get to Windows, no In Place setup is available...

So, i read about DISM could be used as a before-last resourt... How? I'm not sure what this error is, so i'm a bit lost about getting something out of DISM to correct it.

Solution:

Your machine is most likely now in what's known as a torn state (meaning no future updates will install properly).  Had you done the script in the KB article, the service pack would have installed properly and you wouldn't be in that state.  Read more about it here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/03/11/why-you-don-t-want-to-edit-your-pending-xml-to-resolve-0xc0000034-issues.aspx

Recently i updated my operating system to windows 7.but my webcam is not responding correctly.it's saying that driver's are installed.but how to open it?there's no option  in computer.

Solution:

In Windows 7, the webcam is not listed in Windows Explorer. You can find it in "Devices and Printers":

1. Click start button->Devices and Printers.
2. If the webcam is installed successfully, it will be listed and will be recognized by applications like MSN.

But in Devices and Printers, you cannot open the webcam and start capturing like in XP. You have to use webcam's capture application to do this.

If the webcam is not installed, go to windows 7 compatibility center to find out if it's compatible with windows 7.

Even after disabling the GoogleUpdate service, I can find it running in my process list. And it is always there running every time. How can one truly disable it?

I run msconfig, go to Services tab, check the Hide Microsoft services box and GoogleUpdate is disabled. If I run regedit, there is no GogleUpdate in localmachine or currentuser branches (software\...\run)

Solution:

Run AutoRuns and check if it is started somewhere else. This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Other Solutions:

If you don't want Google Updater on your system you can find instructions for removing it on the Google website: http://pack.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=53402

A custom image was captured using imagex. This image was used in the Task sequence in MDT part of the Hydration kit.  A USB key was prepped to use as offline media. Install went smoothly. Reboot after install also went correctly.

The problem actually started after disconnecting USB and rebooting the system. The error message is, bootmgr is missing. Trying to boot from USB also didn't work anymore. Only option was to boot from CD and use diskpart to delete everything. Any ideas ? I think that the drives got different letters after reboot but don't know how to prevent this.

According to your description, this error was caused by PC cannot find the boot partition. I suggest to perform these tests you can try:

1 Unplug all unnecessary hardware, USB driver. Sometimes the issues caused by external Hard disk connecting with the PC

2 Perform a Startup Repair in WinRE

There is a link to fix “Bootmngr is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart”. It works on Windows Vista but still works on Windows 7

I've got a client with a windows 2008 Small Business Server Operating a domain. Nobody can remember the Active Directory admin password or any password for any account that has admin rights to get into the machine.

I have also tried OPHCrack and that didn't work, also, there are a few computers on the network that are able to authenticate but when the server was originally set up, those users were denied local login access. Any ideas?

Solution:

I've heard this method works
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar-VoO9ogHc
I haven't had a chance to test it myself so feedback would be great.

I am creating a new domain in new forest. On every attempt, it asks me to create a password with net user command. What is it all about?

Solution:

First: Check if you have admin rights. And if you logon as administrator does your administrator account have a password? Blank password will not be accepted while creating active directory. If this is the case, simply run the following from the command line
net user Administrator /passwordreq:yes

Second: Is this your first attempt to create a domain, or you retry to create from the failed attempt, whether the DC with the same name already exit and it is detained or removed from the same domain. if so first do metadata cleanup and try.

If you still have problem, please provide actual error messages rather than descriptions. My guess is that you are trying to create a new AD domain on a server with a local admin account that does not have a password. Providing more information and actual error messages would clear that up.

I have a 100% brand new hardware and it has been 100% stable for the past 3 months. Today I got my first blue screen and checked the windows log to find this:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000007f (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000080050033, 0x00000000000006f8, 0xfffff800031058c1).

A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP.

Report Id:  Bug Check 0x7F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

0x00000008 , or Double Fault , indicates that an exception occurs during a call to the handler for a prior exception. Typically, the two exceptions are handled serially. However, there are several exceptions that cannot be handled serially, and in this situation the processor signals a double fault. There are two common causes of a double fault:

  • A kernel stack overflow. This overflow occurs when a guard page is hit, and the kernel tries to push a trap frame. Because there is no stack left, a stack overflow results, causing the double fault.
  • A hardware problem.

It may caused by ZoneAlarm, if you have it installed, update the network card drivers first.

You can also try this Hotfix if updating the network driver doesn't fix it:
Stop error message when you run an application that transfers data by using the UDP protocol in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7: "STOP 0x0000007F"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981180/en-us

When this doesn't fix it, remove ZoneAlarm if you have it installed.  If you still experience problems with it, Please configure your Windows to create a kernel dump and upload the zipped dump (C:\Windows\memory.dmp) here or any of your online file sharing account like SkyDrive and post a link to haja @ bench . com.

Having a problem with Windows 7 Ultimate. I bought a laptop with Win7 home premium 64-bit and all was well until the hard drive bricked and had to be replaced.

I wasn't too upset as I'd backed up all my data a week before to an external drive and decided when I got my new hard drive I'd treat myself to windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

However after installing ultimate (everything is fine it works great) it won't restore the files from the backup. I can see the backup in explorer but when I start up the backup and restore program in control panel it can't see it!

Because you already re-installed the Windows 7, so the backup component on the fresh installed computer can not detect the backup files which backed up originally.

Please choose “Files from a backup made on a different computer” and type the local IP address to navigate the backup folder where it stored.

Note: Before that, please properly setup the settings which are related to sharing files and take the backup folder's ownership to you in the meantime.

Also, you may try to directly Right-Click the backup folder to see whether there is Restore Options.

In addition, the following link for your information.

Support for Windows Vista without any service packs installed ended on April 13, 2010. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2). For more information, refer to this Microsoft web page: Support is ending for some versions of Windows

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. This article describes how to troubleshoot problems in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 by performing a clean boot. This article also describes how to start the Windows Installer service and how to reset the computer so that it starts as usual.
Note When you perform a clean boot, you may temporarily lose some functionality. When you start the computer as usual, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or you may experience the original behavior.

This information is not intended to troubleshoot specific problems. Therefore, before you follow these steps, search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for information about your problem. Use the text of the error message or a description of the problem when you search. To search the Knowledge Base, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.

  • 1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
  • 2. Click Start How To Perform A Clean Boot In Windows Vista Or In Windows 7 1  , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

How To Perform A Clean Boot In Windows Vista Or In Windows 7 2  If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

How To Perform A Clean Boot In Windows Vista Or In Windows 7 3
  • 3. On the General tab, click to select the option Selective startup, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

How To Perform A Clean Boot In Windows Vista Or In Windows 7 4

  • 4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

  • 5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

  • 1. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
  • 2. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
  • 3. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
  • 4. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.
If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

  • 1. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1.
  • 2. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
  • 3. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.
If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.
If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

  • 2. In the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
  • 3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

I have a server in house that has a self-signed certificate used with SSL on top of IIS.

My pc runs windows 7 64 bit and IE 8. When I type in the address of the server from the pc IE 8 browser as in https://192.168.25.100

IE explodes with certificate error messages.  I have searched the web including the solution of loading the certificate in the the local computer physical store of the trusted certificates when the site is not a trusted site and every permutation within. Still IE shows that there is a certificate problem.

What is worse is when I ask the web server to serve a file to my desktop, IE says the file is not available because the certificates don't match. Is this a problem with IE8, because IE7 was just fine as is Firefox - all version.

Solution:

This issue can be caused by the Root Certificate missing in trusted root store of client machine.

You can open it from Internet explorer which will display the certificate. Click on the button Install Certificate to launch the Certificate Installation wizard.

If it cannot be fixed, please take the following steps to deploy root certificate via Group Policy:

Open Group Policy Management Console.

Find an existing or create a new GPO to contain the certificate settings. Ensure that the GPO is associated with the domain, site, or organizational unit whose users you want affected by the policy.

Right-click the GPO, and then select Edit. Group Policy Management Editor opens, and displays the current contents of the policy object.

In the navigation pane, open Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Public Key Policies\Trusted Publishers.

Click the Action menu, and then click Import.

Follow the instructions in the Certificate Import Wizard to find and import the certificate.

If the certificate is self-signed, and cannot be traced back to a certificate that is in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities certificate store, then you must also copy the certificate to that store. In the navigation pane, click Trusted Root Certification Authorities, and then repeat steps 5 and 6 to install a copy of the certificate to that store.

In Windows Vista and back, you can use "Custom" to uncheck unwanted update notifications. But, we wont find this in Windows 7. I'm referring to all the Language Packs which sit there every time I check updates. Not critical, just annoying. How to solve It?

Solution:
1.) Open Windows Update.
2.) Click on the link that says "xx Optional updates are available"
3.) Right click on the first language pack and select "Hide Update" and Acknowledge any UAC warning.
4.) Lather, Rinse, Repeat until they're all hidden.

Even better.  Highlight them all, then right click the first one and click hide, it will then hides them all. We don't have to keep doing it for each one.

Rule #1:

With most Microsoft software: When in doubt - right-click... If there isn't anything that looks obviously like the control you're looking for - it may easily be hidden on a right-click menu.

I installed windows 7 PRO from windows XP three weeks ago on a P4 system with 4 GB of ram.  My problem is every 3-4 days (I mean every), I boot up windows 7 and it says Master Boot Record not found, press CTRL-ALT-DELTE to restart.  I fix it with Bootrec command in the recovery console.  Windows 7 boot again.

Why does Windows 7 keeps on losing the MBR every 3-4 days?  I ran windows XP for over 6 years and lost the MBR once or twice.  I install Windows 7 Professional and the MBR lost/corrupt every week.  Is this a bug with Windows 7?

Solution:

The problems seems to happen when you lose power or the system does not properly shut down.  It happens other times too.  If you do not restart when Windows 7 Professional ask you to, the problem has a 80% chance of happening.

After performing a further research, I found that this issue can occur because some system booting files are corrupted after the sudden power lose or improper computer shutting down happened.

First, you can try the suggestions provided on the following website to repair MBR on Windows 7.

How to repair MBR on Windows 7

After that, if the issue persists, I strongly suggest performing a Startup repair to check the issue since the Startup Repair Tool can automatically repair the following problems:

Missing/corrupt/incompatible drivers

Missing/corrupt system files

Missing/corrupt boot configuration settings

Corrupt registry settings

Corrupt disk metadata (master boot record, partition table, or boot sector)

Problem update installation

Startup repair in Windows Recovery Environment

1. Please insert the Windows 7 DVD and reboot the computer.

Please ensure that the DVD-ROM is the first booting device. If you are unsure how to change this BIOS setting, please contact the computer manufacturer for more information.

2. When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar to launch Windows Recovery Environment.

3. Click "Next" and click "Repair your computer".

4. Click “Startup Repair” to perform Windows Startup Repair.

Please check if the issue persists.

In addition, since your BIOS is old, it is also recommended updating your motherboard to check the issue.

Have 24 new computers. Exact same build, Windows 7 Enterprise. About half are having this problem when installing printers. "Windows cannot connect to the printer." Details: "Operation failed with error 0x0000007e". I do not want to have half the computers with local port definitions and half with whatever is automatically assigned.

Tried using script "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in /q /n \\myserver\myprinter" but for half it works. Others it does not. Some printers install, others consistently don't.

Those that don't are HP CLJ 2550n, HP CLJ 2840n. Had problem with HP LJ 4250 but printer firmware update fixed that. Did nto fix on others. Again, half of the new PCs with same config will connect and work just fine.  Ideas?

Solution:

I would like to know if adding the printer as local printer works.

Install the printer locally, on lpt2

Then at command prompt enter this redirect command

net use LPT2 \\computername\sharedprintername /persistent:yes

In addition, according to microsoft database, if the driver has color profiles, the add printer wizard will fail. It is a known bug and windows developers do recognize this issue and are working on it. If there any solution is available, it will be delivered via Windows Update.

Many tools use temp files to create a new file and then use MoveFileEx to move the temp file over the existing file. In some cases Subversion does this multiple times in just a second. In this case Windows 7 starts returning ERROR_FILE_CORRUPT where older Windows versions returned ACCESS DENIED like errors.

This is not a big deal by itself, but this error is also broadcasted to other parts of the system.

  • * You get a status bar popup indicating that you should run chkdsk.exe to check your disk
    * A chkdsk run is scheduled for the next reboot.

Several Subversion users have declared their hard disk broken because of this bug misreporting one error after another

I can replicate this behavior with a simple C++ program on Windows 7 (multiple versions on different PC's), but I can't replicate this issue on Windows Vista or older systems.
(These start returning access denied constantly).

On Windows vista you only get the access denied (error 5) and the application doesn't quit. If you explicitly mark the directory as not to be indexed by Windows search and disable your virus scanner you get +- the Vista behavior. Either one of these can get you the errors.

Microsoft Claims that no actual corruption has occurred.

This is a known regression in Windows 7 in the NTFS file system.  It occurs when doing a superceding rename over a file that has an atomic oplock on it (atomic oplocks are a new feature in Windows 7).

The indexer uses atomic oplocks which is why it helped when you disabled the indexer.  Explorer also uses atomic oplocks which is why you are still seeing the issue.  When this occurs STATUS_FILE_CORRUPT is incorrectly returned and the volume is marked "dirty" which is a signal to the system that chkdsk needs to be run.  No actual corruption has occurred.

Before you go off and tell me that WinSxS is important to my OS's functionality...
I had a Windows 7 SP1 RC installation, which I sort of wrecked and I had to reinstall the OS over it. Of course, what happened was that the old Windows files were transferred to Windows.old. However, the WinSxS folder of the original installation remained, and lives on at eight gigabytes. When I tried deleting it, either from XP or from the new Win7 installation, I got "Access Denied" or "You Need Permission From TrustedInstaller" respectively.

TrustedInstaller owns the WinSxS folders, and I cannot change the ownership status. I can rename the folder, but not delete it. I have tried to use MoveFile to delete it on bootup, and I'm this close to installing a tiny Linux distributable just to try and delete the folder.  How do I delete this useless, space-eating folder?

To take ownership of the folder, right-click it, select Properties > Security Tab > Advanced at the bottom > Owner Tab > Edit > Highlight your username and put a tick in ‘Replace owner on sub containers…’ and Apply > OK. You will only have the ‘Replace owner on subcontainers…’ box for folders not files. Click Yes when you receive the Security pop-up window then click OK to the Close/Reopen message.

Now go back to the Properties > Security Tab. Click Edit > Add. Type in your User Account Name in the box under Enter the objects name to select. Click on Check Names > OK. Click on your User Account Name to highlight it. Check the box for Full Control > Apply and OK etc.

Here are some summarized points of what I understood about how all of it works.

To start by answering the question with the perfect answer posted above. Best advocie is not to touch winsxs. Maybe some of the files can be trimmed like the mp3's, avi's, etc but the rest of the system files should be left alone. I too am using Link Shell Extension as posted above by Ronnie Vernon, easy way to see which are hard linked (red arrow) and which are simple files.

Before getting here I saw in a lot of places people asking for the cleanup tool after installing SP1 for Windows 7 like vsp1cln. There is no dedicated tool, it all got integrated into the Disk Cleanup service. One note that I would make here is that even if the option says it will remove a few hundreds of MB after I cleaned up my drive the service removed around 3GB of excess files, so it varies from system to system. Funny, now I have even more space than I had before installing SP1. Nice one, MS.

Regarding the hard links, I got amused by the confusion created around them. I'm not a linux geek, and I usually use only soft links... they're enough for me, but people didn't get how the hard ones work and how size is counted.

A group of selected files, links or not, will always be counted as a sum. This means that if I take a 10MB file, and make 2 hard links, the selection of all three of them will have 30MB and this is the correct size, because unlike the soft links which are related to the file's original Master File Table entry and have 0 bytes, hard links are related to the data itself, have their own entry in MFT but point to the same data address, obviously having as size the size of the actual data, same times, attributes and so on. Why, below.

How much is left on the drive? Simple: exactly as much as the drive's own properties reports. Don't go selecting all the files, hidden and non hidden on C and making comparisons, or using tools that do that automatically because it won't show the actual HDD usage. Why? Because:

  1. That operation makes a list of all the selected files including hard links as separate files, takes each of them and adds the sizes up, the drives properties counts the actual stored data
  2. Not all the files will be counted, folders protected from traversing and files from reading will not be counted and the System Volume Information usually has very large files protected just in this manner
  3. That number is useful only in cases of file transfer, if the files, links, etc need to be copied to DVD or NAS, that's how much they would occupy, and the links will not be preserved since they are NTFS specific features, not available or available in different forms under ISO, UDF, NFS and other file systems, but they will be cloned.

Make a test... copy a 10MB file, a.exe, from a different drive and notice how the free space drops by the 10MB. Make a hard link (mklink /H b.exe a.exe). Now these two files selected will "use" 20MB in the selection properties, but actually only 10MB verified at the drive's properties, which will have the same free space as it did/does after the file copy. Delete one, either one, the free space will remain the same. Now delete the last one and the space will increase by 10MB. Was there any harm done? NO.

What is winsxs?

A much better dllcache. Where with the dllcache in XP we had copies of files that actually added to the size usage since they were cloned, this actually improves usage but not total protection (against viruses). If a rogue uninstaller thinks it has to remove some runtime libs from System32, it would only delete the links, but not the data, then the links would be recreated while keeping data space usage at lowest possible, better than archiving winsxs in cabs and having the cabs along side the original files. Also winsxs bring serialization, compartmentalizing files with the same name but different version, for the dev's sake, which is a good thing / bad thing, it makes them lazy to code properly but it helps when they don't want to code anymore.

I did this to help anyone that lands here out of the same reasons I did... excessive "usage of space" by winsxs after SP1. And I hope it was helpful.

IE8 > Tools > Manage Add-ons shows the Shockwave Flash Object.  The Adobe Flash Player is not listed.  Never is listed.

The latest versions of Adobe Flash Player and SWF Player are installed -- both have been uninstalled/reinstalled several times.   Flash Player was uninstalled with Adobe uninstaller.

I have reset the IE8 settings. A new user account was created and the issue was tested in a clean boot. It still does not work. Not to slam IE but Firefox opens the swf files flawlessly.

Now when I saw any link on any other site, the provided  I could click on that link and IE8 would open it.  However, if the url was typed into the browser or copy & pasted,  IE 8 would not open it.

What happens: Type URL into the browser > click enter and/or click on url window arrow > File Download security pop-up window appears > click open > browser window status bar shows download icon in bottom left > nothing.

I dont think there is any particular solution for the problem stated here. We can try the solutions one after the other to know what really helps us.

Go to adobe.com and install everything fresh. Also I suggest resetting IE to check the result. Remember, Adobe support is basically non-existant.  I spent several hours circling around and around trying to find where one should/could seek support help, as the flash player and or shockwave player are not purchased software.  Concerns were posted in a couple places.  Nothing.   It should be noted though that a Flash Player update was issued a day or two after my posts but the problem still exists.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Reset-Internet-Explorer-settings

Click Start -> All programs -> right click Internet Explorer -> Run as administrator

Also, you can ask Adobe support for help

http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/contact.html

Note: Since the website is not hosted by bench3, the link may change without notice. bench3 does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

What's really strange is that IE 8 will play a swf from a document link but if I enter the URL of a swf into the IE 8 address bar, it will not.

  • Enter the url in address bar; click the go arrow OR hit the enter key, the status bar shows the url, a pop-up asks "Do you want to open or save this file"; choose open, popup closes, then nothing happens.  Status bar shows done.  With the url still in the address bar, if the enter key is clicked again, (not refresh) the swf will eventually play.

Due to some unfortunate events one of my friends Windows 7 registry has corrupt. I've tried repairing it using System Recovery Options / Startup Repair but with no luck. The Recovery software identifies the problem (Corrupt Registry) but is unable to repair it. I've tried to copy the files from windows32/system/config/regback to windows32/system/config still no luck (the back-up files are the same with the corrupted ones, same date, time, size --> great job windows!).

I've tried even to use System Recovery (i have several restore points) but i got this wired message: "You must enable system protection on this drive..." --> stupid error, if I haven't had enabled system protection how do I got the restore points...

Is it possible to "extract" the registry files from a file called winre.win that I found in the folder /Recovery? I understood that this is like a system recovery image... I really do not want to make a clean install unless is the last option available.

Solution:

You can do In-place Upgrade to repair the system. Please launch your installation program in the system, and choose Upgrade. In general situations all programs and personal data will not be lost. However I still suggest you backup important data before upgrade.

I advise people to Export a copy of their registry when they install their system and also from time to time afterward.  The file can be huge (hundreds of megabytes), but it can be a lifesaver if you get a corrupted registry.

In Windows XP. If you make a System State backup, registry files are backed up to C:\windows\repair folder for later user. In addition, System Restore in Windows XP saves Registry files in System Volume Information directory.

In many occasions, I was able to recover Windows XP by copying registry files from System Volume Information folder to over write the registry files in C:\Windows\System32\Config folder. I was able recover Windows XP from serious issues, including bad virus that normal windows interface unusable.

But in Windows 7, I don't see that I can find any saved registry files in System Volume Information. Windows 7 allows you to boot from the Installation cd or recovery cd and restore from a previous system point. But it does not give me the flexibility of recover the System hive and/or the Software hive.

In the corporate environment, it is hard to make regular backups for client computers. I rely on Windows XP's system restore so that I can recover the system by restoring the registry hive files from System Volume Information folder. What about Windows 7? I need to understand the recovery procedures so that when problem comes we can recover the systems.

  • Look in the \windows\system32\config\regback folder.
  • There should be copies of the registry files stored inside that folder.
  • They are backed up periodically and stored in that folder.

Leave the registry alone and don't use any registry cleaner.

I have run Windows operating systems since Windows came out, on multiple systems.  I have managed divisions of engineers running Windows.  I don't need to reinstall my operating systems - ever.

And I have never, ever run a registry cleaner.

My current main Windows 7 workstation is as quick and nimble as ever, logs 0 errors or warnings, stays up 24/7 between scheduled reboots (e.g., for Windows updates), and does the TONS of multitasking work I ask it to without fault or complaint.

What I do to keep my systems in good working order is:

  • Avoid installing things from the internet that I don't know and seek out on purpose.
  • Avoid allowing Internet Explorer to run ActiveX and active scripting except from sites I trust.
  • Avoid running email attachments.
  • Use a good antivirus / antimalware package in addition to Windows Defender.
  • Review the programs that are running or will run on boot-up / login occasionally and make sure I know what every one is and why it's there.
  • Read up on what works and what doesn't.
  • Most importantly, installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Being a career software/hardware engineer, you might say I am not in the norm, but even for a layperson managing a Windows system in a conscientious way does not take a lot of effort, does not require much sacrifice, and absolutely NEVER requires a "registry cleaning".  It just requires you to exercise the brain a little and do what makes good sense.

Somehow the task manager has lost the header tabs to move from applications to processes to network. It was there originally.

I also lose from time to time my volume control icon, and it doesn't become hidden, it just disappears completely. To change the volume I have to either go into the control panel/sound and then adjust the volume and leave that open if I need to turn it down. OR reboot and it sometimes comes back.

When I go to 'notification Icons" in control panel the icon and lettering for sound icon is not bold or high lighted but instead it is diminished. I have also seen a popup stating that modification will take affect when it (the sound) is activated as a pop up, but can't remember where I saw that happen.

Solution:

Double click on the edge of Task Manager.

---- Norton AntiVirus 2009

Windows 7 Task Manager Has Lost Its Header Tabs

In addition to the above mentioned solution, you can open the Notification Area Icons control panel item and you can try clicking the "Restore default icon behavior" link near the bottom of the window and see if that fixes the MIA volume control.

I am missing my desktop icon, where can I find it?

If the Desktop icons are missing when we switch on. If so, it can be caused by ‘malware’ but check this registry key before running your ‘anti‘ programs. Firstly, start Explorer via Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc then on the Applications Tab click ‘New Task’ at the bottom, type explorer.exe and press Enter. If it doesn’t start, you are almost certainly infected.

Now check the registry key by going to the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane, make sure there is a REG_SZ named Shell and it has a value of "explorer.exe" (no quotation marks). If it’s not there, create it by clicking Edit > New > String Value then right-click it and type explorer.exe then restart the computer.

If you cal load the desktop and all desktop icons are missing? If all the icons are missing, right click on the Desktop, click "View", check "Show desktop icons".

If the issue persists, try the following suggestions:

Check Desktop Icons Settings

1. Right click on the Desktop, clickPersonalization.

2. On the left pane, clickChange desktop icons.

3. In the Desktop Icon Settings window, select the icon you would like to display on the desktop.

4. ClickOK.

If you are using Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterpise editions, you can check the Group Policy settings as well.

Check Group Policy Settings

1. Click theStart button, type gpedit.msc into the Instant Search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press Enter.

2. ClickAdministrative Templates under User Configuration.

3. Double-clickDesktop.

4. Double-clickRemove Name Icon, where Name is the name of the location for which the icons is missing. For example, if the Recycle Bin icon is missing, double-clickRemove Recycle Bin Icon.

5. Click theSetting tab, click Not Configured, and then clickOK.

6. Repeat for each of your missing icons in Windows 7.

Whenever I make system changes in windows 7, I make a system image backup. When that backup is done, it also asks if I want to make a system repair disc.

As I have already got one, I usually answer no. However, it does pose the question: when does one need to renew the system repair disc?

For example: is it necessary when one updates to SP1?

And are there maybe other special conditions that would require to renew the system repair disc?

I don't believe its necessary to make new one. As long as you have a system image the current Windows 7 repair disc should be fine. The disc basically lets you get to your system image. It doesn't actually repair anything.

System repair disc includes the Windows Recovery tool. If you encounter the boot issue, the System repair disc can help you access to your system image backup. However, there is no need to recreate it because it only contains Windows Recovery tool.

For more information, please refer to the following article.

I have to be honest, this isn't something I thought about until I realized that I didn't have a restore points.  I think it was deleted by my defrag program.  A shocker to me once I started researching how the defrag program uses VSS.  That was just one example, there are others that may not be the user's fault.  Were we could all benefit from a default factory restore function (including both the registry, files, etc) that would restore the OS to factory defaults without having to do a upgrade reinstall, repair.

Microsoft understands what their customers might have gone through when unfortunately encountering issues of no restore points. They should do more education previously to avoid such inconvenience. Actually, Backup and restore center is intended to prevent such system crash.

Windows 7 has a Imaging feature built into "Backup and Restore". Once you have your machine loaded up with OS patches/ SPs/ Apps/ Drivers use "Backup and Restore" from Admin Tools to create a 'System Image'. This will create a backup Image that allows you to restore a system in about 45minutes rather than a bare metal install that takes hours.

Some OEM version Windows contains “the one key to Factory Restore” function.

Regarding to the repair\In-place upgrade, it is kind of like the Factory Restore function for Windows retail version. Please understand by performing In-Place Upgrade, your personal data and installed programs usually will not be removed but we may need to run Windows Update to install all the available updates for your system to update these system files to the current version.

If you have any useful feedback of the product. You can submit the suggestions to the Product Feedback Team : http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Windows%20%207/Feedback.aspx?formID=195

After installing and removing Acronis on a Windows 7 computer, Windows 7's Backup and Restore program is not working. Is there a way to repair only this part of Windows 7? Everything else in Windows 7 seems to be ok.

If you cannot start Windows Backup and Restore in Windows 7? If so, please perform the following steps to check the result:

First, please check if Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services are running and set to automatic in Services Console.

1. Click on Start, type Services in Start Search. When the Services page is open, scroll the page to find Volume Shadow Copy and Backup service.

2. Right click on them and check if they are started.

3. If the services are disabled, start the services and set it to Automatic, then check if the issue disappear.

Second, please run sfc command to check if it can fix this issue:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

If the issue persists, I also would like to suggest you perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system:

I use mmc 3.0 with the remote desktop snap-in to manage all my servers because it's easy to switch back and forth with RDP.  The options with MMC 3.0 and the RDP snap-in are quite limited though, specifically, I'd like the functionality of mapped drive pass-through, and alt-tab on the remote machine.

I know it's not an option in the default GUI - Is this possible by modifying the saved file or by another means?

Solution:

Based on our research, that’s hard to add option in MMC, the function and options in MMC is released by design. One have to understand this.

In addition, we can use RSAT for an administrator in Windows 7  to remote manage servers, may be that tools you will interested.

SmartScreen Filter helps to protect you from online threats. Internet Explorer 9 is designed to help protect you from evolving web and social engineering threats. Whether it's a link in email that appears to be from your bank, fake notifications from social networking sites, search results for popular content, or malicious advertisements—you name it, someone's trying it. With SmartScreen Filter, you can browse with more confidence knowing you have better protection if you're targeted by one of these types of attacks.

smartscreen Filter SmartScreen Filter helps combat these threats with a set of sophisticated tools:

  • Anti-phishing protection—to screen threats from imposter websites seeking to acquire personal information such as user names, passwords, and billing data.

  • Application Reputation—to remove all unnecessary warnings for well-known files, and show severe warnings for high-risk downloads.

  • Anti-malware protection—to help prevent potentially harmful software from infiltrating your computer.

If a malicious website is detected, Internet Explorer 9 blocks the entire site, when appropriate. It also can do a "surgical block" of malware or phishing hosted on legitimate websites, blocking malicious pages without affecting the rest of the site.

Smartscreen Filter also works with Download Manager to help protect you from malicious downloads. Potentially risky downloads are immediately blocked. Download Manager then clearly identifies higher risk programs so that you can make an informed decision to delete, run, or save the download.

We recommend that you turn on SmartScreen Filter. You can turn it on or off at any time. You can also help improve the web for everyone by reporting suspected malicious sites.

This article describes how to compact the personal folders (.pst) files in Microsoft Outlook, to eliminate deleted item space and recover room on your hard disk.

To conserve space on your hard disk, you can delete unwanted items from the various .pst folders, and then compact the files to make them smaller.

When you delete the unwanted items from each folder, it only moves them to the Deleted Items folder, which is in the same file. You must delete the items from the Deleted Items folder to permanently delete them so that Outlook can compact the file.

The compacting process does not remove all the free space from the file. It leaves either 16 kilobytes (KB) or 4 percent of the file size (before compacting), whichever is greater.

To be compacted, a file must meet the following requirements:

  • The file must be 16 KB or larger.
  • The file must have at least 16 KB of space freed since the last time it was compacted.

You can start Outlook file compaction manually, or run it automatically in the background.

Automatic Background Compaction

Personal folders (.pst) files that are not on your computer may require manual compaction because of interactions between the computer where the .pst files are stored and your computer.

Automatic compaction takes place as an idle task in the background. The following conditions must be true for this background task to take place:

  • Outlook must be running.
  • The computer must not be engaged in other CPU-intensive tasks such as copying or downloading files.
How to Manually Start PST Compaction
  • On the File menu, click Data File Management.
  • Click the personal folders (.pst) files that you want to compact, and then click Settings.

For Windows Vista, the default path of .pst files is drive:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. For Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the default path of .pst files is drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

  • Click Compact Now, click OK, and then click Close.

Sometimes this situation can happen if you have Windows 7 or windows Vista and windows XP. That Windows 7 and Windows Vista can connect the other on that computer, but some other days it keeps asking for the Network password. If you have experienced these kind of errors, please read below.

Make sure, In the network settings the network detection is on, the folder and printer sharing is on, public folder sharing is on, ask password for sharing id off.

Since the issue occurs when you access other computers from Windows 7, we may need to check the settings on the other computers:

1. What is the version of the Windows XP computer. If it is Windows XP Professional, if the Guest account and Simple File Sharing is enabled.
2. If “Password protected sharing” is disabled in Windows Vista.
3. If the issue occurs when you access a specified shared folder.

The best way to resolve such issues is disabling “Simple File Sharing” in Windows XP (Professional), enabling “Password protected sharing” in Windows Vista and Windows 7, and creating the same username\password on each computers. If Windows XP is Home Edition, you can enable Guest on it.

Another way is enabling “Simple File Sharing” and Guest account in Windows XP (Professional), disabling “Password protected sharing” in Windows Vista and Windows 7, then give the permission to the Guest account for the shared folders.

If nothing really works, please be sure that you use the same workgroup name for all of the computers on your network which is also emphasized on Networking home computers running different versions of Windows.

Please try Safe Mode with networking to check the issue.

  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple Operating Systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu.
  • When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with networking, and then press Enter.
  • Log onto the default administrator account or any user account with the administrator privileges.

In Safe Mode with networking, your system display and desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To go back to Normal Mode, we just need to restart the computer.

If after keeping pressing F8, nothing happens. It is because the settings have been changed by the computer manufacturer. Please refer to the user manual or contact the computer manufacturer for the information how to enter Safe Mode with networking.

If the issue persists, let’s first troubleshoot the issue between Windows XP and Windows 7 to avoid any confusion, please take the following steps on your XP machine.

  • Go to Start –> Run –> compmgmt.msc
  • From the left hand pane, select Local Users And Groups –> Users
  • In the right hand pane, right click Guest and go to properties.
  • Check “Account is disabled” option.

In the curious product category of connected, voice-recording, pen input devices, Livescribe pretty much dominates. Its latest, the Livescribe Echo Smartpen, has a slimmed-down design and a host of new collaborative applications on the horizon.

A Pen That Digitizes and RecordsStill, like its predecessor, the Pulse, the Echo’s greatest strengths are its ability to record written notes, sync them with live audio recordings, and provide an easy way to manage digital copies of both.

Despite being a bit slimmer than the Pulse, the 0.5-by-6.2-by-0.8-inch Echo is still a bit unwieldy. The rubberized tip helps your grip, but the 1.3-ounce device feels more like a big magic marker than a pen.

Nestled inside the tip of the Echo pen is a high-speed, infrared camera that captures 70 frames per second. This camera captures anything you write, as long as it’s on the specially imprinted, not- quite-white note paper the company supplies. Connect the pen to your PC, and you can download digital copies of your handwritten notes.

Pretty cool already, but there is more. The Echo also has a built-in microphone that records audio as you write. Want to find out what the professor was saying when you were taking your notes? Just tap a spot on the paper and click Play, and you’ll hear exactly—and clearly—what he was saying as you wrote in that spot. You can play back the audio on the pen or export it to your Mac or PC, where every stroke of your Echo pen is shown as the audio plays back.

The Echo comes in 4GB ($169.95) and 8GB ($199.95) models, which can store 400 or 800 hours of audio respectively. The Livescribe Echo is a high-tech bridge between analog, handwritten notes and  the digital world. This is a writing instrument any gadget geek will love.—Dan Costa

Livescribe Echo Smartpen
$169.95 direct (4GB)
PROS: Digitally captures handwritten and audio notes. Sensitive microphone. Pencasts can be shared online. Growing app library. CONS: Bulky. Actual pen tip is just a basic ballpoint. Requires specially printed notepaper.

Virtualization is here to stay, and enterprises are adopting it across, both server and storage environments. Virtualization, while still in a nascent stage, is shaping up to be one of the major trends expected to influence enterprise infrastructure such as the server, storage, network, application and desktops.

Server virtualization is the forerunner in the adoption of virtualization. Some of its obvious benefits include: consolidation, reduced operating expenditure, increased utilization rates, increased business flexibility, lower hardware costs, better utilization of computing resources, reduced space requirements, power and cooling requirements and improved IT staff productivity.

With these benefits, organizations also have to deal with a host of new challenges that virtualization brings for the IT teams. One of the biggest ones being data protection. Some of these data protection challenges include increased risks to enterprise data and possible increased costs of protecting that data. Hence, data protection can no longer remain an after thought for organizations and they need to put in a considerable amount of effort in planning for the same.

By following some of the below mentioned data protection ideas  in virtualized environments, the IT department can reap the rewards of data protection in the enterprise.

Back Up Virtual Machines:

The 2010 Symantec Disaster Recovery survey findings reveals that only about half of the data within virtual systems is regularly backed up and only 6 to 10% of virtual environments protected by replication or failover technologies.

Failing to back up virtual machines is a risky endeavor. It is important to understand the reasons why many virtual machines have been left out of the backup strategy:

  • Virtual machine sprawl: virtual machines spread like crazy.  Many a times IT doesn’t know about new virtual machines. Even if they know about them, they are not aware of the Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)/Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) requirements.
  • Cost of backup agents: In the past, IT would have to buy individual backup agents for each new server. This could potentially cost thousands of dollars and quickly eliminate any real savings created with virtualization.
  • Tools from virtualization vendors: Existing tools have contributed to the failure to backup by making backup too complicated or promoting the use of virtualization vendor tools as a primary backup tool.
  • I/O & bandwidth impact: Another concern has been the concern over dragging down the host machine and/or network by moving a lot of data for backup.  The whole idea of virtualization is to increase server utilization/CPU utilization/network utilization and if you are successful, there is less “slack in the system” to handle backup loads.

Backing up virtual machines is absolutely essential and there are a number of tools available at organization’s disposal to help them overcome the problem of failing to backup virtual machines.

Never Install Backup Agent on Every Guest

Virtualization has mirrored the growth of many disruptive technologies. Linux is a case in point. Linux is simply a part of the IT infrastructure in organizations today. However, in its early days, there were specialized professionals and niche technologies that supported this new technology

A common mistake that many IT organizations make is developing a divergent approach to making backups of their virtual servers. Past limitations in backup support from virtualization vendors, the skill set requirement of backup vs. virtualization professionals, and historically poor support from major backup vendors are some of the main causes for the same.

IT has consistently asked for a single vendor for managing both virtual and physical environments, in spite of some organizations having invested in two separate tools for backup (One for physical servers and one for virtual servers). This happens because a differing approach to backup leads to inconsistent data management, backup confusion, and conflict between various IT organizations. This issue can be resolved by bringing together the virtualization and backup teams in organizations, assign ownership, authority and resources for backup of both physical and virtual machines.

However, this approach results in significantly higher costs from backup agents and unnecessary management complexity.

Today, virtualization vendors have improved APIs to support centralized backup with granular restore. Many vendors have the ability to backup at the hypervisor level which has made it unnecessary to install a backup agent on every guest for backup purposes.

Backing Up Applications Once

The IT departments of many organizations are also backing up the same data twice in the virtual environment: the first time for full image recovery and the second time for more granular file and object recovery.  The reason for doing so is when IT needs to recover a single email or a single calendar item from Exchange, if only the virtual machine has been backed up, it will have to first restore the entire server, then recover the granular data.  The issue is that the whole operation takes twice as long, puts twice the amount of load on the network, and takes twice the storage capacity for the same data.

However, today, due to the availability of new capabilities from virtualization vendors and backup application vendors, there are solutions that allow the IT department to do a single backup and still recover granular object items.

Avoid Backing Up Of Redundant Data

There is tremendous amount of duplicate data on virtual machines.  Consider the duplicate data in the OS, particularly if you use a standard image.  It is not a wise strategy to backup all of that duplicate data as it congests the network, lengthens the backup window, and raises storage hardware costs. This is completely avoidable.  The IT department should consider the following strategies:

  • Leverage VMware’s new vSphere block level differential/incremental backup and restore
  • Implement block-level data deduplication during backup of virtual machines to identify and exclude redundant data

The amount of duplicate data in virtual environments is significantly higher than physical environments - duplicate OS, cloned machines, test machines etc., all of which increase the amount of similar blocks in infrastructure. Deduplication can improve the backup speed significantly.  In the case of virtual machines there is a significant amount of duplicate data, allowing for major space and time savings.

Consider Restore

One of the most common challenges in backup is the failure to consider recovery. This issue is more common in the virtualized environment since there are more options to restore than in the pure physical world.  The IT department needs to consider what it wants to restore and the level of granularity while considering restoration.  It is also wise to consider where to restore to (physical or virtual, onsite or offsite, etc.). Engagement of key stakeholders to plan objectives and associated processes is crucial. A written plan agreed on by all stakeholders and which can be tested regularly is ideal.

Finally, physical-to-virtual (P2V) restore is something virtualization vendors are great at helping with; however, virtual-to-physical (V2P) restores are a bit more difficult. There are good reasons to restore to both physical and virtual machines and the IT department should ensure it has the capability to go in both directions.

Conclusion

With strong controls being implemented on IT spending, virtualization, being more affordable, is gaining significant attention across all organizations. However, move to a virtualized IT infrastructure involves a number of changes. The process of virtualization poses a number of challenges for data protection including the risk of unprotected data, increased storage consumption, and changes to the traditional recovery processes.  By carefully evaluating these ten common pitfalls, and thereby implementing measures that can enable them to avoid these, the IT department can manage the risks surrounding unprotected data and the costs from implementing poor backup strategies.

“Many a times IT doesn’t know about new virtual machines. Even if they know about them, they are not aware of the RPO/RTO requirements.”
