This article will explain you how to connect Your Linux PC to Windows Active Directory Domain Control.

Many companies are using mixed IT environment's using a mixture of Windows, Linux, UNIX and Mac’s and I for one am using a mixture of Microsoft Windows and Linux (Ubuntu). And also, this is one way of saying the IT Cost, instead of investing in Licensed operating system, many small and medium scale business can go with Linux as client side.

On my network I use a Microsoft Active Directory installed on Windows Server 2003 R2 and want to be able to get all Server (Linux & Windows) as well as Desktops (Linux and Windows) to authenticate in a central location.

Since browsing the web I managed to find this cool package that can be installed on Ubuntu. Hardy Heron (8.04) which enables you to add and authenticate Ubuntu 8.04 and later against a Windows Domain Controller (Microsoft Active Directory)

So here goes…

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install likewise-open
sudo domainjoin-cli join fqdn.of.your.domain Administrator
sudo update-rc.d likewise-open defaults
sudo /etc/init.d/likewise-open start

Using the above commands you have installed ‘likewise-open’ which is the package that makes it possible for the Ubuntu client/server to logon to a Windows domain, added the client/server to the windows domain, updated the system services and then started the service.

Now that the LikeWise package has been installed you can now logoff (although I recommend full system reboot) and logon in this format:

DOMAIN\username

You need to ensure that you prefix the username with the Domain name.

The good points about this kind of setup is as follows:

  • Single username/password combination across entire network.
  • Enforces password policys
  • Likewise Open enables Linux, Unix and Mac authentication on a Microsoft network using Active Directory.

A user can now interactively log in to the Linux, Unix or Mac machine using Active Directory credentials, and can access any kerberized services that the non-Windows machine hosts.

    Review:

The new Nokia Oro has once again lived up to standards and expectations from Nokia faithful's worldwide. Not only are these phones competing with other OS's and giving them a run for their time, they are also giving users far more experience and richer features that they can really ask for.

I personally feel Nokia has carved a niche for themselves by sticking to the Symbian OS. This kind of OS helps sets the tone and speed in the mobile phone community even if most people consider it a dying breed by catering for those who still believe that nothing compensates an OS like Symbian.

If the Symbian OS was to be obsolete and warranted a change, Nokia wouldn't have made the Anna OS which is a direct competitor other OS like Android and the likes which are equally good as well. I believe people also have a choice to change phone models if they like but not to bash them simply because they feel left behind.

Now a days, Mobile phones aren't made for everybody so therefore, although, people  have a right to complain, they should compare with adequate research and history. I would advise people to stick to their pocket restrictions and stop whining about what they can't afford.

It also pays to note that Nokia as a company are not the type that embrace change without testing the changes. After all, Nokia was a late comer in the 5MP category but we can all attest to the fact that theirs is one of the very best in the market today.

Thankfully, though there are many to complain about Nokia, Nokia is still number one and will hopefully remain this way for a long time to come.

Yet another Galaxy From Samsung. Yes, Samsung has finally officially announced the Galaxy R Smartphone. The phone had leaked a while back, known as the Galaxy Z back then and we even managed to do a hands-on with it but it’s only now that Samsung has come clean with it.

The slim, chic casing is just 9.55mm thick while a sophisticated metallic finish enhances the device’s fashion credentials, making the device an essential fashion accessory. Even though the device is incredibly lightweight (weighing just 131g) and stylishly contoured, it still features a powerful 1650mAh battery with Samsung’s advanced power consumption technology – delivering 580 minutes of talk time and 550 hours of standby time.

Users can take high-quality pictures and film HD video before playing back the images on the device’s large 4.19” Super Clear LCD touch screen. Consuming less power than competing models while offering clarity and a wider viewing angle, the Super Clear LCD screen enables a comfortable mobile viewing experience – complimenting the device’s cool design with stunning visuals.

Samsung Galaxy R Pros And Cons

    Other Specifications Are As Follows:

        • It will have a 4.2-inch Super Clear LCD, unlike the Super AMOLED Plus on the Galaxy S II.

        • It will also be running on a dual-core processor. Although Samsung does not specifically mention which processor it is we know for a fact that it is the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, which may not be as good as the Exynos but still packs a punch.

        • It retains the 1GB RAM from the Galaxy S II and will have 8GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 32GB using micro SD cards.

        • The camera has also been downgraded and can now capture 5 megapixel still images and 720p videos but the Galaxy R can still play 1080p videos.

        • Connectivity includes HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0 support.

        • The Samsung Galaxy R runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered by a 1650mAh Li-Ion battery.

Unlike other high end phones Samsung produce, this phone has SLCD display, it doesn't have exynos, it's a 5meg camera instead of 8. This is actually pretty good for indoors shots too.

But, Samsung Galaxy R is not made to compete against the Galaxy SII. So, it is not fair to compare  Galaxy R with Galaxy SII. Anyhow, Samsung Galaxy R to be released in Europe by the end of July and will eventually be rolled out globally.

Quality of the Samsung lineup are made of plastic, BUT it doesn’t mean "cheap" in fact most people like the way it is built, light and slim. Besides, who need an brick on their pocket? I don't like some phones that weights and feels like an old "Block Brick"

The battery cover was able to bend over 135 degrees without breaking, That's pretty  good. And if you want to check out how durable Samsung's Plastic is check out this video. The Build quality it's not premium but it's tough enough.

Samsung has to admire this. A new phone out every few weeks, which makes the previous model pointless. And at some point of time the best thing we feel is to never buy a Samsung new, wait a few weeks and then the price will drop.

So far one week point about Samsung Phones is the Battery Life. But wait, its not week just for Samsung Phones. Almost all Smart Phones need more battery power to do its work. Also Android don't help that good on battery conservation.

I am owning galaxy i9003 and after inactivating packet data connection i get maximum 12hr of Backup.

Samsung at the moment produce clearly better phones in the market! You cannot expect to launch a phone that is remarkable only with one particular feature like camera or what ever.

PhoneArena previews the Samsung Galaxy R. The Samsung Galaxy R is the first handset to walk in the shoes of the Samsung Galaxy S II. A slightly stripped down version of Samsung's flagship, it wears similar looks, packs an equally powerful core and only downgrades the camera. For more details, check out our web site: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-R-Preview_id2793

And to conclude, Lets not be bias about anything. Its buyers choice to buy what they wish. One should understand that no phone is perfect and the perfectness depends on users and how they use it.

There is no point to discuss under the disadvantages of Samsung Galaxy R yet as its still to be released to general public. But, the only point we would like to know is the battery life. If its good, definitely this will stay long in the market. And If you are due for an upgrade, You can consider Samsung Galaxy R. But i wish you should also use your mind to understand your needs before buying a Smart Phone.

Are you worried about the lost data in your hard-disk or did you forget to offload your personal videos from the camcorder or memory card to your PC and now lost it?

Undoubtedly, lose of data, important official data, most memorable photos, documents etc. would be very pain bearing. At that moment one can only think who you didn’t make a copy of it. Then you go to a data recovery person and he charge anything between $100-$200.

So, don’t be worried much about the recovery part because with the right tools for the right jobs, you can easily recover your precious data.

When a file is deleted from your computer, its contents aren't immediately destroyed. Windows simply marks the hard drive space as being available for use by changing one character in the file table. If you manage to start an undelete process before Windows overwrites that part of hard disk with new files. You can set that flag back to "on" and get your file.

As I know, you can download some free recovery software as follow to recover deleted files.

Recover Deleted Files Including Data Deleted Using Shift Delete

Warning! Stop using the current disk as main disk, please keep it unchangeable before recovering the files. Because, if you write additional activity on it. It might further damage the files that you try to recover.

The best way to use the data-recovery software is to immediately stop using the media that contains the missing data. For example, memory card, hard drive, flash drive or in case smartphone. It would minimizes the probability of data recovery.

              1.Panda Recovery

Pandora Recovery actually recovers files permanently removed from Recycle Bin, files originally deleted using Shift + Delete keys bypassing Recycle Bin and files deleted from DOS prompt. Pandora Recovery allows you to find and recover recoverable deleted files from NTFS-formatted volumes, regardless of their type - you can recover pictures, songs, movies or documents. Setup file is 2.12 MB in size. For more information, please visit the following link : Panda Recovery

              2.TOKIWA DataRecovery

DataRecovery is freeware and written by TOKIWA to undelete accidentally deleted files even from recycle bin. It supports FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS undeletion. Even in both NTFS compressed files and EFS encrypted files. Zip file is only 198 KB in size, no installation required and it’s portable. Download: TOKIWA DataRecovery

              3.Undelete Plus

Undelete Plus is a quick and effective way to restore accidentally deleted files. It can also recover files that have been emptied from the Recycle Bin, permanantly deleted files within Windows using the Shift + Delete, and files that have been deleted from within a Command Prompt. Undelete Plus works under Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista operating systems. The program supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives including FAT12/16/32,NTFS/NTFS5 and image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards. Program is only 583 KB in size and requires no installation. Portable. For more information, please visit the following web site. File Scavenger [Not Free]

This is not a freeware, however, in my past experience, this did the trick for me. File Scavenger is Comprehensive, award-winning file undelete and data recovery utility for NTFS and FAT/FAT32 disk volumes on Windows® 7, Vista, XP, 2008, 2003, 2000 and NT 4. Users often need to access files on the go, perhaps to review a report with a client, check recent sales data in a worksheet, or update the spelling on a slide. Office Web Apps give you tools to review your files and make simple changes from any point you have web access.

Although the programs are robust enough to help you create, edit, and share simple files, they do not include many of the specific tools that are available to you in the Office programs you run on your computer. For example, high-end protection features, such as Information Rights Management (IRM), are not available in Office Web Apps.

For increased security, Microsoft recommends you use the full version of the software available on your desktop or laptop computer.

Additionally, although you can view tracked changes in a document that has been posted to a SharePoint document library and opened in Word Web App, the web program doesn’t include any functionality that will enable you to work with the tracked changes.

To work with tracked changes, you need to use your desktop version of the software.

Here are some other differences you should be aware of:

              • Format Painter isn’t available in Office Web Apps.
              • You can’t add symbols or shapes or use the equation or date and time feature in
                Office Web Apps.
              • Word Web App doesn’t allow you to edit objects such as SmartArt.
              • Translation features and the thesaurus are also not available.
              • The Spelling Checker is available only in Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
              • Macros are not enabled in any of the Office Web Apps.
              • You can’t use inking or embed media files in a notebook in OneNote Web App.
              • Microsoft released a the next Windows Phone operating system, codenamed Mango. This new release will add features that make sharing files easier and more seamless when you’re interacting with Office 365. Mango also supports Lync functionality so that you can take your instant messaging and presence on the road with you while staying in sync with Office 365.

Here are the ten simple steps that will help improve the speed and performance of your Personal Computer.

There’s so much information out there in bench3 about PC performance (especially on Windows machines), it’s difficult to be sure what’s right and what’s not so helpful. Here are 10 proven performance enhancements you can make to your computer, many of which are free.

              Stay Away From Malware:

New machines shouldn’t have malware on them. But one of the most common causes of slow PC complaint is actually the presence of malware.

Malware can sneak onto a computer in a zillion different ways and quite often it sits in the background slowing your machine to as it sends out spam emails, searches for other computers to infect, works on cracking cryptography, or any number of the other nefarious tasks that hackers like to use their botnet slaves for.

There’s a good chance that the malware brought even more friends with it (that’s often how you see computers with thousands of viruses on them not long after the initial infection), and the infection may be bad enough to justify a wipe and reload. My first step in investigating a slow system is usually a virus scan.

              Keep Your Windows Drivers Up-to-Date:

Do you know that all your hardware has a supporting driver, and the hardware manufacturer often release a better driver for the hardware. And the best way to make your hardware work good is to support it with the most recent and updated drivers for them.

Upgrade to a better video card

For typical business productivity tasks, a video card probably isn’t an upgrade that will have a lot of value. But for gamers and other similar uses, a video card is a slam dunk upgrade. If your current card and motherboard support SLI or CrossFireX, adding a second card and bridging them will be a good option as well. In some scenarios, better video cards can be a huge benefit even without heavy onscreen video work, because certain applications can leverage the GPUs for calculations.

11 Effective Ways To Increase Your PC Performance

              Get a faster drive

Many times, the real performance issue is the speed of disks. Look at numbers like the RPMs, cache size, seek speed, and transfer rate to buy a faster drive. Often, a good drive will seem slow because the computer’s power settings are allowing it to spin down. You may want to consider changing these settings to make sure that the disk is more likely to be ready to work when you need it to. While the SSD vs. hard disk debate is still continuing, SSDs usually seem to feel faster to users. Boot times are usually cut for sure. But something about an SSD makes a system feel more responsive or “snappy” to use, and for day-to-day work, that’s a great feeling.

              Address hardware and driver issues

All too often, system slowness is actually a sign of hardware problems. For example, if your CPU isn’t being properly cooled, it will often have its speed reduced in an effort to keep it from overheating. Recoverable errors with disk access can kill your throughput while not showing up as a dead drive. And bad hardware drivers can often make the whole system slow, especially video drivers. Using utilities to check your CPU speed and various temperatures, scanning for hard drive errors, and updating your drivers is a good start to investigating performance problems. Often, problems caused by hardware or drivers are not just poor speeds, but system flakiness too.

              Use a RAID

Using a RAID can dramatically lower the read and write speeds of your disks, depending upon the RAID level you choose. You will want to do some research to see what RAID level fits your needs the best. Personally, I am a fan of RAID 1, 6, and 10 because I feel that they offer appropriate levels of data protection along with a good measure of speed improvements.

              Try a different browser

It’s no secret: Different browsers perform differently, and most people spend a lot of time in their Web browser. Benchmarks really muddy the browser speed conversation. Some browsers perform well on some but do badly on others, even when they are supposed to test the same thing. The problem with the benchmarks is that what they usually test is not real work performance! While JavaScript is an important part of the modern Web, few Web applications beat on the JavaScript engine hard enough to produce a noticeable impact on performance. That said, it’s been my experience that the Chrome browser is the fastest for actual work. If you want to have your Web browser feel more responsive and lively, consider a switch to Chrome.

                Remove junk

It’s easy to have a computer get loaded up with junk that slows it down. The worst part is, we invite this garbage into our lives by installing “helpful” utilities, toolbars, and other add-ons. I could easily write a list of 10 kinds of computer-stalling junk. Here are some of the things you’ll want to seek out and remove for best performance:

                • Automatic update systems for various applications (but be careful: some apps, like Flash, Acrobat, QuickTime, and Web browsers are prime malware targets and you will want to keep these up-to-date)
                • Things that run on startup
                • Windows services you don’t really need
                • Crapware from the PC maker
                • Toolbars
                • Browser plug-ins (the Skype browser plug-in is an especially bad offender, I’ve found)
                • P2P applications
                • Web servers and database servers that were installed by since-removed applications, but left behind

Add a faster DNS lookup server

Most ISPs love to brag about how much bandwidth they are giving you. But they don’t mind letting the rest of their infrastructure slowly get overwhelmed or deteriorate. Among the biggest offenders are the DNS servers our ISPs use. If you want to know why things seem to take forever to start loading, slow DNS servers are often the cause. Consider adding a fast DNS server as your primary DNS server in your TCP/IP settings. Google’s Public DNS server is a great option.

                  Defrag

Defragging your hard drives is a great way to get some more performance. While modern Windows systems automatically defrag on a regular basis, I’ve found that the Windows defragging is fairly unaggressive. So, we recommend that you make your PC to perform defragmentation at regular interval.

                  Check network connectivity

Time and time again, “system slowness” actually is caused by networking issues. Our computers do so much on the Internet that slowness there can affect just about everything you do on a regular basis. While there isn’t enough space to write an exhausting troubleshooting list here, some of the things you should try (or investigate) are:

                • Replacing the network cables, switches, routers, WiFi access points, etc.
                • Calling the ISP and checking the distance from the CO (for DSL) or the local segment’s current load (for cable); the ISP may need to rewire or rework its connectivity. Satellite customers will want to double-check their dish installation and ensure that it is tightly locked down and pointed in the right direction.
                • Malware scanning on all PCs to see if malware is burdening the network
                • Inspecting the wiring of the phone lines (for DSL) or coax (cable customers) to look for loose connections, corrosion, or flaky wires
                • Cable customers will want to find out how many splitters are between the line from the pole and their modem. If it is more than one (and preferably only a two-way splitter), they should rewire so that they have only a single two-way splitter between the pole and the modem to ensure the cleanest signal possible.

These are the 11 ways that will make your system work as fast as it worked when you purchased it. And one more bonus tip that I have not discussed here is, keep your Windows up-to-date. As what I have discussed above, some applications, like Flash, Acrobat, QuickTime, and Web browsers are prime malware targets and you will want to keep these up-to-date.

And it is recommended that you configure your windows to install updates automatically at some specific time when it is available.

When we used to work on Windows XP, we will be having a build in Administrator Account. And in fact it is mandatory that we create a Administrator Account by default while installing Windows XP.

What it means is, when we can able to login to Administrator Account, it is understood that we have all rights on the System and to do everything that can be possibly done with Windows.

The administrator account used to be there in plain sight and we could use it right form the installation as the default account without needing any special tweaks.

However, with the advent of Windows Vista, came the User Account Control with better restrictions to avoid any glitches. As a result the admin account was gone.

Well it was there all the time only you needed the right way (an one-liner command line execution) to unhide it.

And now in Windows 8, just like the previous versions it is still comes as hidden account in the newest Microsoft offering, Windows 8. And lets see how to enable built-in administrator account in Windows 8.

Warning! Administrator account is kept hidden purposefully for making the system fool-proof against any unintended or misuse of the Windows 8 Operating System. So, proceed with caution.

                1. Type lusrmgr.msc on start screen and open the app that appears as the search result.

(or) Click start and Run (Windows Key + R), type lusrmgr.msc and hit enter. This will open the Local Users and Account Manager (LUSRMGR).

Steps To Enable Built-in Administrator Account In Windows 8

                2. In the LUSRMGR window, double click the users folder to show the list of local user accounts.

Steps To Enable Built-in Administrator Account In Windows 8 - User Account

                3. Once the Administrator account is there, right-click on it and choose Properties. In the Properties dialog, uncheck the option “Account is disabled”.

Steps To Enable Built-in Administrator Account In Windows 8 Administrator Properties

                4. Since the administrator account enjoys all the rights and is free from UAC, it is highly recommended to maintain a strong password to ensure secured access. To change the password, right click on the Administrator user and choose Set Password.

                5. You will be shown a warning stating the risks of changing the password. Read it and use the Proceed button to change the password using the password changing dialog box.

Steps To Enable Built-in Administrator Account In Windows 8 - Password Change

                6.  Change the password in the next window and click on OK. The password will be needed next time you want to access the administrator account from the logon screen.

Steps To Enable Built-in Administrator Account In Windows 8 - Set Password For Administrator

Restart or log off from your current account to see the changes in action.

As already said, the administrative account is kept hidden purposefully for making the system fool-proof against any unintended or misuse of the Windows 8 Operating System and its files.

So, be cautious while making any changes to the Windows 8 PC using Administrator account.

Note: You can also revert back to the default settings by disabling the the account from the properties dialog mentioned in step 3 above.

Apart from the Metro interface, Windows 8 has got many new features like introduction of ribbon interface for Windows explorer, newly designed task manager, Apps and App store, etc. The main intention of Microsoft is to make sure that the hardware of Windows 7 should be compatible with Windows 8 operating system.

                Step-by-Step Instructions to Un Install Windows 8;

                • 1. If you are in the Metro interface of Windows 8, click on the desktop App.
                • 2. When you click on the desktop App, you will be taken to the desktop version of Windows 8 operating system.

Let’s say you have two computers on your desk and, in an effort to save space, you want to operate them all using a single pair of keyboard and mouse.

There are two solutions here. If the computers are connected to the same network, you can use software programs like Input Director or Synergy to operate them with a common keyboard and mouse. In the other scenario where the machines aren’t connected, you can get a KVM switch to share one keyboard and mouse between them.

One of the better alternative is to go for Mouse without Borders. My work setup is quite similar to what you see in the illustration above and I have been using the Input Director software all this while to control the two Windows PCs with one keyboard and mouse. Input Director is reliable and (mostly) works without problems though it does require some understanding of the Master and Slave concept.

And alternatively, Mouse without Borders will see things even better and easy than the previous solutions.

The best part about Mouse without Borders is how easy it is to set up. You install the utility on all your Windows computers, enter the security code provided by the software and your computers will get linked. This is almost as simple as pairing a set of Bluetooth devices.

Step by Step Instructions On Installing and Configuring Mouse without Borders:

Step 1 of Installing Mouse without Borders:

Installing Mouse without Borders – Step by Step 1

Step 2 Installing Mouse without Borders:

Installing Mouse without Borders – Step by Step2

Step 3 Installing Mouse without Borders:

Installing Mouse without Borders – Step by Step3

Step 4 Installing Mouse without Borders:

Installing Mouse without Borders – Step by Step

Once installed, you can not only use the same keyboard and mouse across your computers in a seamless manner but you can also drag and drop files between them. This is so convenient. Earlier, I had to create shared network folders or had to use Dropbox to transfer files but now I can simple drag them from desktop A to desktop B as if they were on the same computer.

With the Mouse without Borders utility installed, you can also send screen capture of one desktop to another by pressing a hotkey or from the system tray menu. After having used the tool for about a week, I never experienced a crash though I did have problems sharing clipboard especially when the copy operation was done inside a Flash application.

Mouse without Borders can only be used to control Windows based computers. If your work environment involves a mix of Windows, Linux or Mac computers, Synergy could still be the only good choice for you.

Google launched Google+ recently, and my first impressions are very positive. And here is why i feel that Google Plus do have the advantage over Facebook and other Social media in fact.

Relevance: Google Plus so far has focused on its social feature – “Circles”, a new way of grouping contacts for targeted sharing. But the future belongs to the Interest Graph complementing the Social Graph.

Facebook has done a not-so-great job capturing users’ interests. Many people have ‘Liked’ hundreds of pages just because they were asked to do so by their friends. Facebook’s obsession with and overreliance on the social graph has corrupted their interest graph, and this might well be Facebook’s Achilles Heel in the long term.

Google Plus takes a different approach. The goal of Sparks is to capture your true interests. It is in a primitive state at present, but I’m talking about the Big Picture here! As Andrew Tomkins explains:

Sparks is essentially the stuff that flows to you through the interest graph and the stream is the stuff that flows to you through the social graph

Google Plus plans to mix these two to create the “mother of all streams”.

Also: Once Google gets to know you better, it can help provide more relevant search results. Classic search disambiguation problem – when user searches for ‘apple’ is it for the fruit or the company? Your interests from Sparks can help Google learn what you’re looking for.

Advantages Of Google Plus Over Facebook

It was reported earlier today that code for Questions has been found in Google Plus. If this comes as a surprise, you haven’t understood Google’s ambitions with Emerald Sea.

Google could easily auto-tag questions. Further, it could easily AutoComplete your Question. And even further, in many situations, Google could answer your question without waiting for a human being to respond.

Imagine such a Q&A service working across mobile devices, where Google knows your location and much more about your interests and friends.

Is It Google Or Is It Facebook:

Google Plus is a challenge for Facebook. Some folks have already opined that Facebook has nothing to fear, that the mainstream users are not going to join Google Plus and quit Facebook in droves. But predictions and reviews have been wrong before.

I wouldn’t dismiss Google Plus so quickly if I were Facebook. Challenges for Google Plus:

Critical Mass: Google Plus needs a critical mass of users if its ever to gain mainstream acceptance. However, these are very early days, and early adopter response has been largely positive.

Games: Mainstream users love games. Google is reported to have invested in Zynga, while Facebook has had a rocky relationship with them. What if the next Farmville were to launch exclusively on Google Plus and not on Facebook?

Simplicity: As it stands today, Google Plus is not actually more complicated than Facebook, it just feels like it because it is new. Try introducing Facebook to a first time user and walk through the different features, and you’ll agree that Facebook has slowly evolved to a much more complex service with a plethora of components. Google Plus will need to become simple and intuitive to attract a sizeable mass of followers before adding new features.

There are a lot of unknowns, and my take is that it’s too early to make predictions. In any case, the stickiness factor of Google Plus is a big challenge for Facebook.

I am very impressed with what I’ve seen so far. There are challenges, but for once, I think the Emerald Sea team is seeing things in the right perspective and making all the right moves.

Windows 8 not only has a all new beautiful User Interface. But it also looks beautiful when giving you a worst experiences, the Blue Screen Of Death.

By now, most of us have already been experienced at least one BSOD on Windows 8, and that is, the HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED Error Message when trying to Install Windows 8 Virtually in unsupported versions of Virtual Machines. You can also follow this link, to know the supported and non supported Virtual Machines For Installing Windows 8 Virtually.

One of the worst experiences that you can get being a PC user is when your PC crashes down right when you are doing something really important on it.

Being a Windows user, if you get to see the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), all you see is the bug check screen with various lines of error codes. That BSOD is indeed the most frustrating thing for you to deal with because in most of the cases, all your unsaved work gets lost because of this.

We all have seen the BSOD screen for years now. But BSOD was never meant to be friendly. In fact, it was meant for engineers who wanted to figure out why your PC crashed. For decades, it always meant crashing of the computer and insurmountable frustration.

Most Popular Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) On Windows 8

But now, Windows 8, is trying to be humane when it comes to the BSOD. The new BSOD doesn’t include the bug check screen with error codes. Instead, it includes a giant sad emoticon and a simple message that “your PC ran into a problem” and that it has to restart. The redesigned OS also includes speed and stability improvements, a metro interface optimized for touchscreens and an app store. However, the developers have opted to stick with its historic blue color.

The new BSOD is much clearer and user friendly. And it looks more humane and compassionate than before. Of course no one likes to see this too often, however if it ever occurs, let’s hope it gives a better feel than the bug check screen.

There are many factors to consider when selecting a file format for a document imaging system. The following are some of the advantages of going for PDF format.

The Software To View PDF Files Is Freeware: A huge benefit of PDF files is that they can be retrieved, viewed and printed with freeware called Adobe Acrobat Reader.

PDF Files Meet Legal Document Requirements: For an imaged electronic document to be admissible in any legal situations like in a court of law, it must be kept in a file format that can not be altered without leaving an electronic footprint.

PDF Files Can Be Used Across Platforms: A PDF File is a document format that represents a document in a manner independent of the hardware, operating system and application software used to create the document.

                What is XPS Then:

The XML Paper Specification (XPS) format is basically an electronic representation of digital documents based on XML. It is a paginated fixed-layout format that retains the look and feel of your electronic documents. As a form of electronic paper, the XPS format provides a way in which you can easily create, share, print and save digital documents.

Follow the below steps to save a document as a PDF file or an XPS file.

Steps to Save Documents as PDF File and as XPS File

                • 1. In any of your Office Application, In the left pane of the Backstage view, click Save As. In the Save As dialog box, browse to the folder in which you want to save the document, and enter a file name. Then in the Save as type list, click PDF (.pdf).

(or) In the left pane of the Save & Send page of the Backstage view, click Create PDF/XPS Document.

Then in the right pane, click the Create PDF/XPS button.

In the Publish as PDF or XPS dialog box, browse to the folder in which you want to save the document, and enter a file name.

                • In the Optimize for area, click Standard to generate a larger, higher-quality file or Minimum size to generate a smaller, lower-quality file. Then click Options.
                • In the Options dialog box, select the document content you want to include in the file, and then click OK.
                • In the Save As dialog box, click Save. (Or ) In the Publish as PDF or XPS dialog box, click Publish.

Steps To save a document in a specific format

                • 1. In the left pane of the Backstage view, click Save As.
                • 2. In the Save As dialog box, browse to the folder in which you want to save the document. Enter a file name, select a file format, and then click Save. (Or)

In the left pane of the Save & Send page of the Backstage view, click Change File Type.

In the right pane of the Save & Send page, in the Document File Types or Other File Types list, click the file format in which you want to save the document.

                • 3. Click the Save As button.
                • 4. In the Save As dialog box, browse to the folder in which you want to save the document. Enter a file name, select a file format, and then click Save.

Although XPS Documents can be easily created once you have the right software installed, just like the PDF, the XPS format is a difficult-to-handle format.

Interacting with an XPS Document is difficult because the format is primarily focused upon document fidelity, data accuracy, file size and compression schemes, elements that are important to generating high quality print output. Thus, XPS Documents can neither be manipulated nor edited easily, and can only be viewed on computer systems that have an XPS Viewer installed. As such, an XPS file is ultimately a final document format ideal for publishing, archiving and transmitting.

The format is now available and accessible from within all Windows applications. Of course, one of the keys benefits of the XPS Document is this integration into Windows operating systems, which makes XPS Documents easy to deploy. This allows all end users to take advantage of XPS technology and the document format simply by upgrading their software.

Even before the beta release of Windows 8, Windows 8 has the upper hand over Windows 7. Its not just as it is new Operating System, but performance wise, it leads the way. And here in this post, lets discuss some of the Advantages of Windows 8 over Windows 7.

Some modifications include touch keyboard, device compatibility, Windows 8 app store, improvement in Internet Explorer 10, new task manager interface, cloud services in Windows Live, Refresh and reset buttons and many more.

                Windows Boot performance:

We have already discussed on our earlier post that Windows 8 Boots faster than Windows 7. But, how Could It Be Possible To Boot Windows 8 Faster Than Windows 7.  To understand the concept fully, read my other post by following this location. Windows 8 Boots Faster Than Windows 7

                Hibernation On Windows 8:

Hibernation in Windows 8 uses a small portion of memory for maintaining 0 hibernation sessions that save state and memory contents to a file name (hiberfil.sys) and read the same file by restoring save contents back to main memory. Using this technique start performance of Windows 8 start boot are more optimized in comparison with Windows 7 OS. Thus, It is Windows 8 which is declared winner in terms of high booting speed.

Windows 8 File System And Security:

Windows 8 provides strong file system support which cannot allow unauthorized users to make changes in Windows secure files as it implements more security for file accessing.

                File Management:

A new feature of "file name collisions will be there in Windows 8 so as to avoid redundancy of same file in system memory. Microsoft argued that resolving file collision requires tricky task which require meaningful choice between similar files. The options of file specification in Windows 8 Operating System are more advanced and which in turn will allow you to resolve file conflict easily.

Windows 8 Will Be The Best For All Kinds Of Devices:

The new user interface for Windows 8 is finally a viable answer to the iPad and Android tablet, but Microsoft wants even more: The new UI should make computing easier on notebooks and regular PCs, as it’s fully usable with the classic mouse and keyboard combination.

Windows 8 developers had removed unnecessary labels and explanatory text which is less important. Only relevant information is added to file definition that reduces search work for users. In this way, Windows 8 file system has gone through many modifications. Thus, it is Windows 8 file system which is declared winner.

Mount ISO And VHD Files On Windows 8:

With Windows 8, Microsoft have eliminated using the physical CD or DVD each time when required. You can simply access the contents of the ISO file without either needing to burn a new disc or needing to find/download/install additional software just to logically access the ISO.

Mounting ISOs and VHDs is one of the few third-party utilities I use. Now if Windows 8 is going to support Built-in ISO and VHD mount tool, that's going to be a great news.

Advantages Of Windows 8 Over Windows 7

                Windows cloud services

We know that Windows Live essential allows users to store data online in Windows 7 OS as well but with Windows 8 OS, you can store bundle of data in Windows Live and even provision is made, through which you can backup your data online using Cloud Backup.

Windows 8 will going to start a new online backup service in which your system data will backup online on server computer. You are provided with a username and password so that anytime you can see your restore data at any computer location.

                Windows 8 is Beautiful:

Windows 8 is beautiful, and it completely revamps the operating system to be compatible with both touchscreen devices like tablets and traditional PCs, is now available to anyone who wants it as Microsoft released a preview (and is also available for download) of Windows 8 to developers at the Microsoft BUILD conference. If you have not downloaded Windows 8 yet, just get your copy of Windows 8 from this location.

You can always be able to right click on an item (image, link) in a web page, select Save (Image, Link) As, select the file location and name and click OK in the Save As dialog.

However on any situation when u cant do that as your browser gets crashed each time you are trying to save a link or image from a webpage, (using Firefox 6.02, Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9). Also, you wont be able to use the Adobe PDF printer from either browser.

Note that, Explorer will not crash, only the application that is trying to save the file crashes and it only happens when the web is involved. We will be able to Save As from any other application (Word, Acrobat, etc.).

However, you can still use the convert to PDF button in Internet Explorer 9 and you can also open a PDF link in a new tab/window. And you can also save PDF Files from Acrobat's toolbar.

So, what is the work around for this behaviour or does any one have any idea of what might be going on?

                Solution:

One of the easiest fix for this problem is, to try System Restore. Follow this link to know how to use System restore in Windows 7

If you would like to do some research with the problem, just try this.

                • Create a new User account in Windows 7 and try if the same problem occurs.
                • If the problem occurs again, the best solution is the easiest solution as we said above.

If the problem does not occur, just move all your documents and settings from that user account to the newly created account and delete the old account. But, make sure you copied all the content from your old user profile to the new one.

System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

Sometimes, the installation of a program or a driver can cause an unexpected change to your computer or cause Windows to behave unpredictably. Usually, uninstalling the program or driver corrects the problem. If uninstalling doesn't fix the problem, you can try restoring your computer's system to an earlier date when everything worked correctly.

System Restore uses a feature called system protection to regularly create and save restore points on your computer. These restore points contain information about registry settings and other system information that Windows uses. You can also create restore points manually. For information about creating restore points, see Create a restore point.

System image backups stored on hard disks can also be used for System Restore, just like the restore points created by system protection. Even though system image backups contain both your system files and personal data, your data files will not be affected by System Restore. For more information about system images, see What is a system image?

Important: System Restore isn't intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged. You should regularly back up your personal files and important data using a backup program.

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

How To Use System Restore In Windows 7:
Ever wish you could turn back the clock after a bad crash? With Windows, you can.

As said above, sometimes installing a program or driver can make Windows run slowly or unpredictably. System Restore can return your PC's system files and programs to a time when everything was working fine, potentially preventing hours of troubleshooting headaches. It won't affect your documents, pictures, or other data.

In Windows 7, you can create more system restore points and see exactly what files will be removed or added when your PC is restored.

Important: For more protection, use System Restore with Backup and Restore, which is designed to help safeguard email, pictures, documents, and other personal files.

                How To use System Restore:

                • Before you start System Restore, save any open files and close all programs. System Restore will restart your PC.
                • Open System Restore by clicking the Start button.
                • In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore.
                • If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
                • Follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point and restore your computer.

Using System Restore On Windows 7

System Restore in Windows 7 can prevent hours of troubleshooting headaches after a crash.

How do I choose a restore point?

System Restore automatically recommends the most recent restore point created before a significant change, such as installing a program. You can also choose from a list of restore points. Try using restore points created just before the date and time you started noticing problems.

The descriptions of the restore points that are created automatically correspond with the name of an event, such as Windows Update installing an update. System Restore returns your computer to the state that it was in before the restore point that you chose.

If you have ever worked in Excel 2003 or earlier, Alt+F would open the File menu. And Alt+W will open the Window menu. Where as, in Excel 2007, these keystroke combinations do not show the Office 2003 keyboard shortcut window. Instead, Alt+F opens the Office Icon menu and Alt+W opens the View ribbon.

This article describes what Key Tips are and how you can use them to access the ribbon. It also lists CTRL combination shortcut keys, function keys, and some other common shortcut keys for Microsoft Excel.

Will my old shortcuts still work?

Keyboard shortcuts that begin with CTRL will still work in Excel 2010. For example, CTRL+C still copies to the clipboard, and CTRL+V still pastes from the clipboard.

Most of the old ALT+ menu shortcuts still work, too. However, you need to know the full shortcut from memory, there are no screen reminders of what letters to press. For example, try pressing ALT, and then press one of the old menu keys E (Edit), V (View), I (Insert), and so on.

A box pops up saying you're using an access key from an earlier version of Microsoft Office. If you know the entire key sequence, go ahead and initiate the command. If you don't know the sequence, press ESC and use Key Tip badges instead.

Note: If you are using Microsoft Excel Starter 2010, be aware that not all the features listed for Excel are supported in Excel Starter 2010.

Many of the keyboard shortcuts in the Office Icon menu match the same shortcuts as in the File menu.

Figure Alt F opens the Office Icon menu.

Figure: Alt+F opens the Office Icon menu.

Thus, Alt+F+S was File – Save in Excel 2003, and this combination still executes a Save in Excel 2007.

Alt+F+D+A in Excel 2003 was File – Send to – Mail Recipient as Attachment. In Excel 2007, Alt+F+D still gets you to the Send menu, but now E is used to send a fi le as an e-mail attachment and A is used to send a fi le as an XPS attachment (Microsoft’s new open source fi le format meant to compete with Adobe PDF).

Accessing Old Shortcut Keys In Office 2007 and Office 2010

Figure: Some of the old keystrokes don’t quite work. If you had memorized Alt+F+D+A, it is now Alt+F+D+E.

Pressing Alt+W in Excel 2003 opened the Window menu. The commands on the old Window menu were New Window, Arrange, Compare Side by Side, Hide, Unhide, Split, and Freeze Panes.

Pressing Alt+W in Excel 2007 opens the View ribbon. All of the keyboard shortcuts (N, A, B, H, U, S, and F) perform identical actions in Excel 2007.

Accessing Old Shortcut Keys In Office 2007 and Office 2010 3

Figure: All of the Alt+W shortcuts from Excel 2003 still work.

Note: In Excel 2003, Alt+W+2 would switch to the next open workbook. To do this in Excel 2007, use Ctrl+Tab.

You may have come across this error message that you wont be able to install any Software's that were related to System Security and those software's that require a registry alteration.

I had this problem in my Windows 7 64Bit that I was attempting to install the Symantec Endpoint client, but the client would not install, and the following message was left in the event log:

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) Installation fails with the following error “Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot. Please reboot the system and rerun the installation.”.

Even a reboot on the client did not solve the problem. As i tried to install after a reboot, the same error occurred again.

                How-To-Fix-Pending-System-Changes-Th

I found that there was a registry entry that was giving me grief with the install, and here are the instructions that I used to fix the problem..

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

To solve this issue, follow one of the options below:
                Primary Solution:

                • In the registry, navigate to:
                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\
                • Back up the registry key.
                • Delete the PendingFileRenameOperations registry value from the right pane.
                • Install the software without restarting the computer first (Restarting the computer may result in the registry key being placed back in the registry before installation.)
                • Restore the registry key from the backup location.

Note: If you do not find the PendingFileRenameOperations registry value in the location above, this error message can be generated if the PendingFileRenameOperations registry value exists in the following location(s):
                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentSetXXX\Control\SessionManager\

                Secondary Solution:

                • Look at the registry value to see what applications are pending.
                • In the registry, navigate to:

                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SessionManager \ PendingFileRenameOperations

                • Locate all entries with a status of "Pending."
                • Rename the value of that entry, placing a "2" on the end of

                PendingFileRenameOperations.

                • Restart the computer.

For Computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7, look for this key:

                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet001 \ Control \ SessionManager \ PendingFileRenameOperations
